4-star Miami commit continues to build bond with Hurricanes coaches, but will be taking other visits

Palm Beach (Fla.) Palm Beach Central four-star 2025 receiver Waden Charles’ decision to commit to Miami may have come suddenly and been somewhat of a surprise to Hurricanes fans, but even after watching an up-and-down season in Miami’s 2023 campaign, he hasn’t lost any enthusiasm about his future in Coral Gables.

Programs including Tennessee and Florida State have made their runs at Charles, the No. 263 overall prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking and No. 36 receiver in the 2025 cycle, but Miami is still the leader for Charles. Miami kept in contact with Charles more than any other program in the final month of 2023, which has played a significant role in helping the Hurricanes maintain his interest.

“I’d always speak to coaches from Miami, like two or three times per week,” Charles said. “We’d FaceTime or they’d find ways to take some time and check up on me. …I want to get back out to Miami (this spring).”

Charles has kept his recruitment open and still hopes to visit schools like Florida — where he plans to visit Jan. 20 — plus LSU and Tennessee this spring, but he’s maintained faith in Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal and receivers coach Kevin Beard after watching Miami’s wideouts take a step forward last year and valuing the relationships he’s built with the staff.

“I’m still with Miami because a lot of other schools have been showing me interest, but (Miami) keeps showing me that I’m a big priority to them and they want me in their program,” Charles said. “They feel like I can come in and impact their program. They’ve been making me feel like I’m a main priority for them.”

Charles visited Miami twice last fall for games — including the Texas A&M game, after which he committed the following week — but has not yet locked in dates to get to Miami this spring.

CaneSport’s Take

Miami is looking to stack another elite receiver class after signing three wideouts ranked in the top 150 for the first time since 2008 — Randy Shannon’s first full recruiting cycle — and is setting its sights on adding other players like Palm Beach (Fla.) Cardinal Newman four-star receiver Naeshaun Montgomery, another elite receiver talent just down the road from Charles.
