No. 1 QB Julian Sayin provides take on SEC Championship game

Julian Sayin, the No. 1 quarterback per On3 Sports, from Carlsbad High School in California, has seen a few ups-and-downs in the last few weeks. Sayin saw his senior season come to an end after a stunning playoff loss. The Alabama commitment saw a thrilling Iron Bowl victory and a few days later received a prestigious award.

Sayin will arrive at Alabama on December 15. He is allowed to start practicing with the team the following day. Sayin said he is running, lifting and throwing during the next few weeks and will continue to work on his craft prior to becoming a college athlete.

He witnessed a miraculous finish to Alabama’s game on Saturday which included the completion of Jalen Milroe’s 31-yard pass on 4th down to Isaiah Bond with 32-seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

“The game was awesome,” Sayin said. “They (Alabama) had some mistakes that led to points being left on the field. They were able to get it done in the end. It was fun to watch; 4th and 31 was just ridiculous. I was really excited for Bond and Milroe.”

Turn-around leads to Alabama playing for SEC Title

Sayin has been impressed with Milroe’s transformation since earlier this season. He has also enjoyed watching the overall team respond without a blemish on its record since the early season loss to Texas.

“I think Jalen’s development has been really good,” he said. “He’s playing with a lot more confidence. He’s not turning the ball over. He just keeps making plays for the team.

“Our team has made a lot of improvements. I was at the Ole Miss game after the USF game. They made a lot of improvement then. The LSU game is when we saw it hit more on the national stage. The blowout win at Kentucky really made an emphasis on us being one of the best teams in the country. I am really excited to see how we end this season.”

Alabama vs. UGA. The game everyone will set their eyes on this weekend.  Sayin included. The two schools battle for elite recruits. Both schools have one of the very best quarterbacks in the country on its commitment list. Sayin considered hopping on a flight to Atlanta, but will watch the game from his hometown on Saturday afternoon.

“I was texting with Coach (Tommy) Rees earlier today,” Saying told BOL on Wednesday. “He talked about the SEC Championship. I was asking him some questions. He was also talking to me about the Silver Pigskin Award I received.

His take on the SEC Championship game?

“I am feeling good about the game,” Sayin said. “I think it’s going to be a good game. It’s kind of like Alabama is the only team who can beat Georgia, and Georgia is the only team who can beat Alabama. They match-up really well against each other.

“I don’t think anyone else who might get into the playoffs has the guys who can beat one of those two teams. If Alabama wins and gets into the playoffs I don’t see anyone beating them. I think it can be a close game. I can see Alabama winning by 10, but I don’t have an actual score prediction.”

Sayin finished his senior season with 2,365 yards passing, 24 touchdowns and only one interception. He completed 75.5% of his passing attempts. Sayin also had 186 yards rushing and an additional four touchdown runs.

He received his award on Tuesday night which is given to the top overall player in the San Diego area. Former USC star Reggie Bush is among the previous award recipients.

“We had a tough loss,” Sayin said regarding his final game. “We had a great season looking back on it.  We lost the final game 46-45 (overtime). Our offense scored every drive. We kicked an extra point at the end. They went for two and got it.

“I am definitely going to miss playing with my guys. We had a really good receiving core that I was close with; Will Cianfirni– who is going to San Diego State and Griffin (Rosenbloom) who is going to Penn to play with my brother.”

Additional notes:

Sayin said he intends to room with Alabama LB commitment, Cayden Jones. The two have become close friends during the recruiting process.Sayin told BOL he is in contact with a few recruits including one is currently committed elsewhere he believes Alabama has a great chance to flip. He will participate in the Under Armour All-America game on January 3 in Orlando. Sayin’s high school coach, Thadd MacNeal, will serve as one of the head coaches in the game.
