‘They think I’m a great fit, want me in their class’: AJ Maddox set for official visit to Ole Miss, then signing day
Texas A&M quarterback commit AJ Maddox has remained committed to the Aggies despite Jimbo Fisher being fired. But others have kept in touch and are still trying to make things difficult for new coach Mike Elko. One program in particular, Ole Miss, has remained in contact throughout the year and never wavered.
“Me and coach Charlie (Weis Jr), we’ve been in contact a good amount of time,” Maddox said. “I came up this summer. Me and my family. We had a deep conversation, how I fit in the offense, some keys to what fits me in the system. He kept in touch with my family.”
It didn’t take long after Maddox and Oak Grove (Miss.) completed the trophy ceremonies for its 7A title last weekend when Weis and Ole Miss came calling again. Maddox and the Rebels connected after the game and had a meeting.
“They saw me play and invited me back after the game,” Maddox said. “We recapped the season, and he told me about the QB room and they think I’m a great fit, want me in their class. Then he told me I had an offer and they want me to come visit.”
Texas A&M is fighting to hang onto Maddox even with its new staff.
“I’ve been in contact with coach Elko numerous times, love the guy,” Maddox saiad. “He has a great plan for the school. I think he’s a great coach. He was at Duke and transformed Riley Leonard. He’s a big part of me being committed right now.”
Per the On3 Industry Ranking, Maddox is the No. 583 overall prospect, No. 39 quarterback and No. 20 player in Mississippi. The 6-foot-2, 180 pound prospect just won the 7A state title after throwing for 3,346 yards and 43 touchdowns. He also ran for 515 yards and was named the title game MVP.
Oak Grove finished the year 13-1 and defeated a red hot Starkville team last weekend. He finished 15-for-20 for 162 yards and a score.
AJ Maddox is quite familiar with Ole Miss. But this weekend is different.
“I want to have a great time, see Oxford with my mom and dad and brothers,” Maddox said. “We weren’t able to spend a lot of time in and around time when we went before. This time will be me feeling Oxford out. I’ll get to meet with Lane Kiffin and Weis and the crew.
“Pete (Golding) and my dad have a long history and great relationship that goes way back to Delta State so that’s cool and will be fun to see him again.”

Ole Miss will get a visit but others haven’t been so lucky.
It was originally reported Mississippi State and new head coach Jeff Lebby were set to host Maddox, but he quickly canceled the trip.
“I have a ton of respect for coach Lebby and MSU, but I am locked in with Texas A&M for now,” Maddox said. “I appreciate everyone reaching out and showing love. It’s a difficult time with the coaching change so I will continue to ride it out and see where they’re heading.”
Maddox says he is also still in contact with a former Texas A&M staffer.
“Me and coach Petrino still talk, he’s keeping tabs on me,” Maddox said. “Not saying I will take a visit, just talking.”
When asked what makes him great, AJ Maddox had quite the answer.
“I’ve always been internally motivated. You don’t want to have outside factors around you, you want to have those key components, composure. I think I have those things,” Maddox said. “You look at quarterbacks nowadays, you need to be a dual-threat, be able to move around. Jayden Daniels, Caleb williams, Bryce Young. Those are guys I look up to you. Playmaking ability, spreading the ball around.
“Daniels is a guy who I think I am very similar to,” Maddox said. “All due respect to Jaxson Dart and others around the country, but I’m a different kind of quarterback than him. Daniels and I have a similar body makeup, build, playing style. That’s the kind of quarterback I want to be. He’s probably going to win the Heisman.”
After this weekend, he says he will take one last visit to Texas A&M then prepare for signing day.
“I will sign as early as possible,” Maddox said. “My grades are 100 percent in check. I will be ready December 20.”
