Miami offers fast-rising OL who is a Hurricanes legacy and “grew up with them being my dream school”
Last week, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and his Hurricanes staff became the latest program to offer rising 2026 Tampa (Fla.) Wharton offensive lineman Canon Pickett.
If the name sounds familiar, you’re not wrong. The sophomore offensive lineman is the younger brother of Miami 2024 four-star defensive line commit Booker Pickett Jr. and the son of former Hurricane Booker Pickett Sr., who played in Coral Gables in the early 1990s.
“When I got the news, I called my brother and parents and started to run around the house,” Canon told CaneSport. “Miami has always been my dream school and I’ve always wanted to go there. They were both excited too, and my brother told me to come home.”
Along with Canon, Pickett Sr. was extremely pleased to hear the news that his younger son also earned an offer from his alma mater, where both he and his wife attended.
“It was surreal,” Pickett Sr. said. “It made me feel like a proud father and excited for the future of both of my sons, and all the hard work they went through was working. Both of my sons getting offered from my alma mater is very special to me.”
Early on in his recruiting process, Canon, who stands at 6-foot-4, 280 pounds, has earned offers from the likes of Florida State, Penn State, UCF, USF, and Charlotte.
“Everything has been good so far,” Canon said. “I’ll be looking at the playing opportunities and other things that they have at that school.”
After receiving the offer, Miami has jumped to the top of Canon’s list of schools for a handful of reasons.
“Just grew up with them being my dream school and my brother being committed there,” Canon said. “Also, how much I have seen the facility and what coach Cristobal is doing. They’re a great school. I’ve been to Hard Rock a couple of time because both of my parents went there, and the atmosphere has always been great.”
Extending the offer to Canon was Cristobal, whom the younger Pickett believes is doing all the right things to turn around the program. The idea of playing under and learning from Cristobal, who was a former offensive lineman himself, excites Canon and is something he would potentially look forward to if he plays at Miami down the road.
“I think they’re getting a lot better, and I think they’re going in the right direction,” Canon said. “That’s also a big thing; I know he’ll be able to develop me into a better player.”
CaneSport’s take
The Hurricanes are wasting no time recruiting Canon, who has flashed all the makings of a Power Five offensive lineman early on. With strong ties to the program and a strong love for the Hurricanes already, this could be a recruitment to watch down the road.
