Michigan to host transfer portal wide receiver in January
Michigan Wolverines football is set to host Wake Forest wide receiver transfer Jahmal Banks on a visit in January, he tells TheWolverine.com. There is currently a recruiting dead period in effect until next month.
Banks received a Michigan offer Dec. 15, after the Wolverines put out a feeler days before. He visited Wisconsin last week, Notre Dame over the weekend and Minnesota early this week. He’s also said that he’d like to get a glimpse at Purdue.
Banks is the No. 125 overall player and 28th-best wide receiver in the NCAA transfer portal.
The 6-4, 205-pounder attended Baltimore St. Frances, the same school as Michigan senior running back Blake Corum, sophomore EDGE Derrick Moore and linebacker transfer commit Jaishawn Barham, who pledged to the Maize and Blue Dec. 20 after two seasons at Maryland.

Michigan will lose starting ‘X’ receiver Cornelius Johnson, a graduate student who’ll be out of eligibility after this season, and Banks could step right in. The big-bodied wideout made 59 receptions — 8 of which were contested, per PFF — for 653 yards and 4 touchdowns this past season.
Senior Roman Wilson could also try his hand at the NFL, after leading Michigan in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches through the first 13 games of the season. The Wolverines have some young talent like sophomore Darrius Clemons but potentially won’t have anyone as proven as Banks returning, especially at the outside spot.
Banks has hauled in 107 catches for 1,404 yards and 13 touchdowns during his career. He’s surpassed the 600-yard receiving mark each of the last two seasons, a proven commodity.
“Jahmal Banks is an experienced and productive WR with great size and length allowing him to be a weapon near the goal line,” NFL Draft Diamonds wrote about Banks’ skillset. “[His] inability to consistently create separation is concerning, but his body control and ability to make tough catches allow him to succeed.
The Wolverines had also shown interest in former Tulane standout wide receiver Chris Brazzell, but he committed to Tennessee Thursday.
Michigan is in the College Football Playoff for the third straight season, set to take on Alabama in the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The Wolverines are 13-0 for the second consecutive year and have won 38 of their last 41 games under head coach Jim Harbaugh. U-M is a slight favorite over the Crimson Tide Christmas Day.
