Rising local quarterback Zachary Katz talks early interest in Miami: “They’re for sure going to the top”
Although it still may be early in his career, Miami (Fla.) True North Classical Academy 2027 quarterback Zachary Katz has already begun making a name for himself on the South Florida scene.
As a freshman, Katz threw for 2,973 yards with an 82 completion percentage (188-229) to go along with 38 touchdowns and just one interception. Those numbers have caught the attention of a handful of programs, including his hometown Miami Hurricanes, which became one of the earliest programs to offer the talented gunslinger.
“Getting that offer from Miami and coach (Mario) Cristobal is something that I’ll never forget,” Katz told CaneSport. “That is going to be a big part of my recruitment.”
Since first playing varsity football as an eighth grader, Katz, who stands at 6-foot-1, 196 pounds, has impressed early on after throwing for 2,874 yards and 35 touchdowns last season. Over the course of his first two varsity years, Katz has a combined 5,820 passing yards and 72 passing touchdowns.
Schools such as Ole Miss, Appalachian State, Western Michigan, Bethune Cookman, FIU, and Miami have offered early on in his process.
“It’s been great and really just a blessing,” Katz said when asked about his recruiting process. “To be noticed by these colleges early on is amazing. I’m going to keep working.”
As far as Miami, although Katz cannot have off-campus direct contact with the Hurricanes staff due to NCAA rules, he is looking forward to building that relationship. Over time, Katz is hoping to develop a strong relationship with Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal, who was the one to offer him.
“They’re for sure going to the top,” Katz said. “You can just tell by the way they’re recruiting and the progression they’re making throughout the season. I’m excited for them, and I’m looking forward to seeing how Miami does.”
CaneSport’s take
Over his two years of playing varsity football, Katz has shown he is more than capable of playing at the Division I level early in his career, which has drawn the attention of a handful of Power Five programs, including Miami. While he may still be a freshman, Zachary Katz is a name that may be poised to shine in South Florida for the next few years.
