Takeaways and Wrap Video: Purdue’s win at Maryland in the Big Ten re-opener
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Top-ranked Purdue was emphatic on the road Tuesday night, routing Maryland 67-53, snapping the Terps’ home winning streak at 19 games.
Our GoldandBlack.com post-game analysis.
LOOKING GOOD WINNING UGLY
Purdue won a low-scoring Big Ten-style of game, a pretty ugly game, but Purdue’s end of the deal wasn’t ugly. Its offensive skill really showed up — shooting and passing, notably — and it got great shots against Maryland’s zoning and pressuring. Maryland is a bad offensive team, but has been pretty good defensively. Though Purdue managed a “mere” 67 points, that reflects nothing on Purdue’s offensive performance. Maryland got more possessions and sort of shortened the game.
What the Boilermakers did well in the context of Big Ten basketball was defend.
Julian Reese did nothing. Donta Scott was fine, but blended in despite having some favorable matchups.
Lance Jones did a better job on Jahmir Young than Young’s stat-padding would suggest, and no one else hurt Purdue. Young finished with zero assists.
Jones has really completed Purdue.
PURDUE’S SHOOTING
It’s deep enough into the season now and Purdue has passed enough tests to call them a great shooting team, but also just a great offensive team, period.
Purdue’s making early threes and making timely threes, but also being relatively consistent throughout games. It is deep with shooters. The non-shooters can beat you.
This is an excellent passing team, too. It was elite tonight in halfcourt offense. The Boilermakers’ skill shows up so much in its halfcourt offense but so too does these guys’ experience playing together.
ONE THING WAS MISSING
Purdue won this game decidedly despite the absence of one of its constants. It shot only 10 free throws and foul trouble didn’t really apply. Purdue reached the bonus in neither half, which is unheard of, but the way this game played out, maybe because it was that clean, maybe because it was officiated passively or maybe because Maryland was in so much zone.
Make no mistake, though: Purdue left this floor without any gripes over calls it didn’t get, but that’s a big part of its winning formula that just didn’t materialize.
