Trey Amos is a major part of filling the hole at cornerback in the Ole Miss secondary

One position on the Ole Miss defense that needed a strong influx of players was cornerback.

Between the incoming transfer portal players, a JUCO signee, a couple of returning players and frosh signees, it looks as if first-year cornerback coach Bryan Brown is going to have plenty of raw material to work with.

One high-level candidate expected to make an immediate impact is Alabama senior transfer Trey Amos, a 6-foot-1 195-pounder from New Iberia, Louisiana.

Amos has already fit into the Oxford/Ole Miss scene and it suits him perfectly.

“The first thing I noticed about Ole Miss is how close everyone is,” said Amos. “Also, everything you want is five to ten minutes away from my house.

“Also, my dog, coach (Pete) Golding, coach (Lane) Kiffin – the whole community, man. Everyone has a great attitude about everything, not just football, but just life in general.”

Amos is also excited about working with Brown, who he is quickly building a relationship with during the offseason.

“Coach Brown and I are on the same page. We are all just ready to get to work,” Amos continued. “He just wants what is best for all of us. Coach Brown is going to be great for the cornerback room – I can already tell. He’s going to lead us to being a great cornerback room this season.

“Simply put, I just trust him.”

Amos is listed on the official Ole Miss roster as a 200-pounder, but he’s quick to correct that small discrepancy.

“Man, I tried playing at 200 and it just doesn’t feel right. Five pounds makes a difference at cornerback with your quickness and movement, for sure. 195 is the right weight for me,” he noted.

Amos has already gotten comfortable with a lot of his teammates.

“From day one, I have gotten close with Brandon Turnage, Key Lawrence, Yam Banks and others. I tell you – once we get to work and come together as a unit, we are going to be scary for the opposition. I feel it,” Amos added. “We have already been meeting with each other and have already developed a bond that excites me.

“We are going to work for each other. We are all ready to work and we are all going to push each other.”

Ole Miss shared a personal goal for the offseason, spring and summer.

“I’m working on just going the extra mile. I feel like there have been times in my career that I have not finished,” Amos explained. “I want to push myself to do the extra things I sometimes have not done in my career because I want to be prepared for everything that comes my way.

“There were times I wasn’t as prepared as I needed to be before. My goal this season is to never be in that position again.”

Amos is a recipient of a contract with The Grove Collective, that signs Ole Miss athletes to NIL deals.

“I am very grateful to The Grove Collective. I am very appreciative of the partnership I have with them,” Amos closed. “They make life a lot better for all Ole Miss athletes and they make the Ole Miss experience one of the best in the country.”

As everything unfolded after the 2023 season, there was a big hole to fill at cornerback.

It’s being filled nicely and one of the main reasons is Trey Amos.
