New England Patriots exec comments on team’s possibility of trading No. 3 overall pick
The New England Patriots, who are in search of a franchise quarterback, have an opportunity to select one with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
For New England, that quarterback is more than likely to be LSU’s Jayden Daniels or North Carolina’s Drake Maye, assuming the Chicago Bears go with USC’s Caleb Williams at No. 1. But with a roster devoid of high-end talent, could New England go with the best player available on the board, Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.? What about trading back for a haul, giving another team the opportunity to snag a quarterback?
As of now, “all options are on the table,” Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf said Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, via Sean T. McGuire of NESN.
While the process will be a collaborative effort, Wolf emphasized that he will be the one to make the pick.
“When it comes to that, No. 3, it’s gonna be a collaborative effort [between] Coach [Jerod] Mayo, myself [director of player personnel] Matt Groh, the whole staff,” Wolf said. “At the end of the day somebody has to has to make that pick, and that’ll be myself.”
Patriots looking for an upgrade from Mac Jones at QB
For the first time this century, the Patriots will look a bit different on the sideline. Bill Belichick, who helped lead New England to six Super Bowl championships, parted ways with the organization after this past season came to an end. The Patriots went 4-13, scoring a league-worst 13.9 points per game.
It’s clear the Patriots need an upgrade from Mac Jones, and perhaps that will be Maye. Maye himself knows New England is a possibility and gave his thoughts on the possible landing spot while speaking on “The Adam Schefter Podcast” this week. Like many, it’s hard to think about the Patriots without mentioning one Tom Brady.
“New England, I mean it’s hard not to talk about the dynasty,” Maye said. “You think of the G.O.A.T. That’s what you think. You think of New England, you think of the G.O.A.T., Tom Brady. It’s a place that’s had a lot of success and had some years lately that they haven’t been as successful and looking to get back on track. And I know that’s right up there near Boston.”
Field Yates, Mel Kiper Jr. predict Patriots will draft Drake Maye to replace Mac Jones
During their latest mock draft, Field Yates and Mel Kiper Jr. selected Maye at No. 3 for New England.
“Just a redshirt sophomore. He has played two full seasons at the collegiate level. I am not saying that age, guys who are a little bit older like Jayden Daniels, is a major detriment. I also think that we should acknowledge that Drake Maye is two full years younger than Jayden Daniels,” Yates said. “He just turned 21 years old recently. The developmental upside is very high.”
“This player has shown a ton of upside, and he is a strike-thrower. I know that we have been talking a lot about Jayden Daniels. But you and I both agree that Drake Maye still has all the goods to be a high, high-level franchise-type quarterback in the NFL.”
