Four-star QB Dereon Coleman earns long-awaited Miami offer after strong camp outing: “I’ve always been a Miami fan”
Jones (Fla.) quarterback Dereon Coleman has been a prospect on the Miami Hurricanes and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson’s radar for some time now.
While the Canes have been in talks with the four-star quarterback, they had not yet extended an offer until Coleman stole the show at Miami’s 7-on-7 camp Sunday in Coral Gables.
“I feel great, and I think I should’ve had it, but you know everything is a process,” Coleman told CaneSport. “Everyone’s time is different. It’s a big in-state, and I’ve always been a Miami fan.”
Despite offering later in his recruiting process, Coleman is still high on the Hurricanes.
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect recently announced his top eight of UCF, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Illinois, Nebraska, TCU, and Arkansas. That is set to change with the Miami offer now on the table.
“It has already switched up,” Coleman said. “Miami will definitely be in it.”
Throughout Sunday’s camp in Miami, Coleman, who is ranked as the No. 314 player in the 2026 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, shined and won the event for the second straight year even without star wide receiver and top Hurricanes target Vernell Brown.
“It feels great, and we did good,” Coleman said. “We had a few young guys on the field, but I just had to be a leader and step up.”
With his recruitment beginning to take shape and new offers continuing to roll in, Coleman has a good idea of what he’ll be looking for in a program.
“The culture, can I fit into a program, will I be able to play early,” Coleman explained. “Also, is the offense similar to something I was running in high school? Can my family make it to my games and a few other things.”
After a handful of visits to Coral Gables, he’s seen a few of those things with the Hurricanes.
“Yes, I do see a few of those things at Miami,” Coleman said. “Their legacy and how they build also stand out. Even if they get down, they always find a way to build.”
CaneSport’s take
Coleman had one of, if not the, most lively arms in Miami on Sunday when he showcased his talent in front of the Hurricanes staff, which earned him an offer. With the Canes now in the mix, the program will continue to monitor Coleman’sdevelopment, and it would be hard not to call them a real contender in his recruitment.
