Alabama RB commit Anthony Rogers visits Auburn, will return for official visit
Four-star running back Anthony Rogers visited Auburn on Thursday. The top-100 overall recruit spent the day touring the facilities, meeting with coaches and watching practice.
“It went well,” he said. “I’ve already been here before, so I went in the locker room, I saw my guy Malik (Blocton) from Pike Road, I met up with Coach (Hugh) Freeze and Coach (Derrick) Nix, watched practice. It was pretty good.
“What led to (visiting) today, me and Coach Nix we talked over the phone some. Auburn’s just an hour away and I just felt like coming.”
It was Rogers’s first time meeting with Nix, who recently was hired as Auburn’s new offensive coordinator/running backs coach.
“I’ve talked to him on the phone before, but since I’ve met him in-person it seems like he’s a good man, a good coach on and off the field,” Rogers said. “His message to me was we watched film, he told me some things that I need to work on. He let me know to continue working, there’s always things you can improve on. Keep school first and just keep striving.”
Rogers also met with Freeze.
“He was giving me his recruiting pitch on Auburn,” Rogers said. “But he also let me know to make the best decision for me.”
Rogers remains committed to Alabama
Rogers committed to Alabama in June, but said he’s looking at and considering other schools.
“I want to just talk to other schools to make sure that I’m making the right decision,” he said.
Rogers added that Auburn “has a shot” with him. He plans to return to Auburn for an official visit.
However, “I like Alabama too,” he said. “I’m still committed there.”
Alabama new head coach Kalen DeBoer retaining running backs coach Robert Gillespie was big for Rogers.
“It was a big deal,” he said. “That’s one of the main reasons I stayed committed. With me and him having developed a relationship since early in my career.”
Rogers, who is listed at 5-foot-8 and 185 pounds, has enrolled at Carver High School in Montgomery, Ala. for his senior season. He attended IMG Academy (Fla.) as a junior and Pike Road (Ala.) as a sophomore. The On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, ranks him the No. 82 overall recruit in the country and No. 7 in Alabama. He’s also ranked the No. 5 running back in the class.
