Auburn teammates rave about Cam Coleman: ‘…wants to be one of the best to ever play this game’
DALLAS, Tex. — Earlier this week, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said he thinks freshman wide receiver Cam Coleman is a “special” player.
But, Freeze also preached patience with Coleman, saying he doesn’t want expectations to climb too high, too early. However, that didn’t stop Coleman’s teammates from showering him with lofty praise on Thursday at SEC Media Days.
Here’s what they said in full, starting with starting linebacker, veteran and culture council leader Eugene Asante, who says Coleman looks like a player that wants to truly be great.
“Cam Coleman is a dynamic player. He’s so dynamic in the way he plays the game in terms of high-pointing the football. He is somebody that’s fast in terms of taking off the top of the defense. The biggest thing I want to emphasize about Cam Coleman, he’s somebody that is a freshman that really cares about this game and really wants to be one of the best to ever play this game at this university.
I spent a lot of hours in the film room. I spent a lot of hours preparing my body. Cam Coleman is one of the last guys to always leave the facility. You don’t really see that from a young guy, so I’m so excited to see him progress. I know a lot of fans are excited to see what he does out there. I know he’s going to make us proud in everything he does this season.”
And then there’s quarterback, team captain and culture council leader Payton Thorne, who can’t wait to target Coleman as often as possible this season.
“He brings a lot. He brings speed, and he brings a great ability to jump, and those are just his physical abilities. He’s a great guy, honestly. He’s been awesome. Really selfless guy. He’s funny, and he works hard. That’s the most important thing. Having a young guy come in like that who is a big prospect, sometimes you don’t know what kind of personality you’re going to get, but he works like he hasn’t done anything yet, which I guess technically he hasn’t at this level.
“He’s been great so far, and it’s going to make a lot of plays for us this year, and Auburn is going to love him. He gives the ability to spread the field, both horizontally and vertically. Teams are going to have to respect that, and I can’t wait to be on the field with him.”
Finally, sophomore Keldric Faulk, who could be Auburn’s best defender by season’s end, loves Coleman’s humility early on.
“Cam Coleman, he’s been phenomenal in the spring. You could tell from when he first came, being five-star or not, it didn’t really matter to him. He came in with his head down. He was ready to work as soon as he stepped on campus. You could tell from the first practice to the end of spring how developed his game was. He was already a pretty good player, but by the end of the spring he looked really good.”
So, while Freeze wants to temper expectations, and that’s fair, clearly teammates have taken notice of Coleman’s abilities and determination to help elevate Auburn’s offense to another level this fall.
