Bigtime DB returning to Gamecocks’ campus

One of the top overall prospects for the 2025 class will make another trip to Columbia on Saturday to watch the South Carolina Gamecocks play.

Jontae Gilbert told GamecockCentral.com that he’s making another unofficial visit to Williams-Brice Stadium to see Shane Beamer’s program take on Florida.

“I really like Coach (Torrian) Gray a lot,” Gilbert told Chad Simmons of On3 earlier in the year. “He has coached in the NFL, he has sent guys to the league and he knows how to coach defensive backs. I saw him coach at practice and I really liked how he was with his players.”

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder was formerly committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes, but backed off that pledge in July.

The Gamecocks currently lead the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) for Gilbert’s services, with over a 78 percent chance to land him according to the metric.

It’s believed that South Carolina remains a major player for Gilbert. Another program that’s made a significant push as of late is Southern California. Those two may be considered the front runners as of now.

The Atlanta (Georgia) Douglass product is ranked as one of the country’s top prospects in the 2025 class. The On3 Industry Ranking – a weighed average of all four major recruiting services – has him as the number 38 prospect in the country. He’s also ranked as the third best safety prospect in the country and the seventh-best player in Georgia.

This month, the state of Georgia made allowances for high school prospects to begin profiting from name, image, and likeness opportunities. As a highly ranked prospects, Gilbert weighed in with his thoughts.

“I’m really excited to be allowed to profit myself as a high school player,” Gilbert told Pete Nakos of On3. “I feel like it’s a great opportunity for us high school players to get the experience early. I’m looking forward to getting to know some great people going forward with the rest of my high school career. My first step will be promoting myself and branding myself.”
