Deion Sanders plans to dress all scout team players for Senior Day
Deion Sanders has a special plan for Colorado’s Senior Day on Saturday against Arizona. And it doesn’t necessarily involve the seniors.
Sanders plans to dress out all the members of the scout team practice players for the game, the last one in 2023 in front of the home fans. A group that includes plenty of walk ons, some who might not be around in a year, Sanders wants to get the scout teamers some shine.
“What I’m going to do — I’m trying to, you don’t know how important scout team players are. Mostly they’re the walk on kids that may never get an opportunity to start or anything. Some of them earn it, they’re really good. I’m trying to dress every last one of them out. Because I appreciate them. I understand the seniors are wonderful,” Sanders said on his weekly coaches radio show. “But those scout team guys are unbelievable, what they contribute to the program.”
And while the opponent on Saturday, Arizona, could give Colorado plenty of trouble, Sanders is hoping his team can build out a big enough lead to get some of the scout team players in the game.
“So, I’ve already told Smitty that we’re trying to dress all those young men out. Just to show my appreciation and love. And I wanna kick butt so they can actually get in the game,” Sanders said.
Sanders is fine with Colorado players fighting in practice
It’s not a secret that Sanders‘ coaching style is unconventional. During his coaches show, Sanders reminded fans just how irregular his strategies for success are.
“We’ve had a great week of practice. We had a couple of fights, which I like,” Sanders said. “It’s a great thing. I always want to know who won because I keep records. I don’t break them up. Some coaches break them up. I don’t. Some guys fight hoping for the break up. No, we’re going to let you go. I love it. They’ve been getting after it. It’s almost like a rededication. It’s almost like a refocus. I love where we are. We’ve had great practices this week, offense, defense, as well as special teams.”
In August, Colorado players got into a scuffle at practice. As assistant coaches lunged between the players, Sanders watched from afar. When everyone settled down, he delivered a poignant message.
“I seen two of you walking off, over there, and you’ve got a key teammate fighting,” Sanders said. “Where they do that at? Where they do that at?”
Not here, his players replied.
“If one fights, we all fight,” Sanders said. “You understand that? I don’t want to see you all walking off when somebody’s fighting. Never again.”
