ESPN College GameDay explains significance of Kentucky making NCAA Tournament run in 2024

Big Blue Nation has voiced its concern over Kentucky‘s latest stretch of losses, and as usual, some of UK’s most vocal fans are calling for head coach John Calipari to either win it all, or move on.

ESPN College GameDay host Jay Williams believes this to be an overreaction from the Wildcat faithful — but should Calipari seriously consider moving on from Kentucky in the coming years?

“I saw after the loss, it was #FireCoachCal. I kind of lost my mind on that a little bit because he also has seven NBA All Stars participating in the game tomorrow night for the NBA All Star game,” Williams said on Saturday morning’s broadcast. “I get that everybody wants the end result to happen today. I really don’t care what Kentucky does throughout the course of the regular season.

“I think a lot of whether Cal decides to stay at Kentucky … Whether he wants to stay at Kentucky, whether he feels like he’s appreciated enough for bringing in all these great players. Does it come together set all the culminate to a championship or made the success rate that players or fans might want them to have, I am not so sure about that. But they’re always relevant and they’re always top of the line in discussions.”

Jay Bilas shut down any concerns that might have risen inside Big Blue Nation about a potential Cal departure, which Williams agreed with. Instead, he pointed to the fact that Kentucky hasn’t played one whole game with a completely healthy lineup this season.

The fact that Kentucky can “score 90 points falling out of bed,” gives Bilas enough reason to believe Calipari and his crew’s season might turn right around by this time in March. GameDay co-host Seth Greenberg agrees with his colleagues.

“Their season doesn’t start until the NCAA tournament,” Greenberg said. “I think what you’ve got to look at when you look at Kentucky is their roster management right now. It is hard to win young players. It is hard to win with a team of freshmen. You have to have some retention, you have to have some culture creators. You got to have some guys that teach those young players how to compete, how to be college players how to be winning players, and I think that’s the problem.

“… I think Kentucky is gonna flip it. I think Kentucky is gonna make a run in the NCAA Tournament. They might not play great tonight, but you’ve got four weeks to tighten up your defense and they will be a team that no one wants to play against in March.”

Before any of that can happen, Kentucky has to get past the Auburn Tigers — who are winning games by a 20+ point margin at home this year. Opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET live on ESPN.
