Five-star Michigan QB target Bryce Underwood on Carter Smith, ‘bet’ tweet, visit plans
Michigan received a commitment from On300 Ft. Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot quarterback Carter Smith this past Tuesday. The reaction from Belleville (Mich.) High quarterback Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 ranked player in the 2025 recruiting class, is unfazed.
“Not a problem with me,” Underwood told The Wolverine. “Just a little competition if I were to put myself in that position.”
Having visited Michigan six times this year alone, Underwood’s opinion on U-M hasn’t altered following the news either.
“It doesn’t change anything (regarding my interest),” Underwood said.
The Wolverines hosted Smith, On3’s No. 8 overall quarterback nationally, for the Purdue game on November 4, which quickly set the wheels in motion for the 6-foot-3, 180-pound dual-threat to choose the two-time defending Big Ten Champions.
Quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell, who led the way in securing Smith, also contacted Underwood and his family to get their thoughts before landing the Florida signal-caller.
“He asked my parents how they felt about it, and they said the same answer that I have,” Underwood said.
Underwood posted ‘bet’ on X just a day following Smith’s decision, which garnered plenty of buzz around Michigan circles. After all, U-M players have used the term in support of suspended head coach Jim Harbaugh.
However, Underwood said his tweet was unrelated to Michigan. It actually had to do with chatter that Davison (Mich.) High could upset his Belleville squad this weekend.
“I figured it out as soon as I posted it,” Underwood said. “I’m like, ‘Oh God.’ But it’s all good.”
Michigan is looking to get Underwood back on campus for the Ohio State game this coming weekend.
U-M’s regular season finale occurs a day before Belleville’s state title matchup against Southfield (Mich.) A&T. It’s not certain if Underwood will be at The Big House then. However, he does know what the expectations are for next Saturday.
“A (win),” he said.
Only 49 more days remain until Underwood’s planned commitment date on January 6 . He enters these next seven weeks with a Top 7 of Michigan, LSU, Penn State, Colorado, Oregon, Alabama and Florida State.
“That’s the date my great-grandmother passed away, so I chose that date to commemorate her,” Underwood said.
Underwood has thoroughly dissected each school’s offense and has come up with reasons why he’s shown a liking to them.
“How you can get the run game, just like our team, pass game, anything you need,” Underwood said. “How you’re able to dissect defenses.”
He also continues to find his purpose when dividing time between responsibilities at Belleville and the recruiting process.
“Just being able to prioritize my life,” Underwood said. “That’s all that’s come with it.”
No visits to any school have been planned by Underwood leading up to his commitment and the December dead period, which begins on December 18.
Return to Ford Field
Saturday’s Division I semifinal contest against Davison was personal.
Underwood recorded four total touchdowns, with three in the air, in a 63-21 blowout to lead Belleville to its third-straight state championship appearance in Downtown Detroit.
“It’s great for the program, great for my teammates and great for the seniors who are leaving,” Underwood said. “Sent off with (potentially) another ring.”
At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, the junior is also listed as the No. 1 overall quarterback in the country and No. 1 player in Michigan, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
