Five things: Why Kansas State flipped four-star Jacques Spradley-Demps

Five things: Why Kansas State flipped four-star Jacques Spradley-Demps

1.) It wasn’t too long ago that Kansas State flipped North Texas commit Jacques Spradley-Demps. He was the first receiver add of the 2024 class for the Wildcats. It is important to note that he has been upgraded to a four-star prospect by On3 since the decision to commit to K-State.

2.) Though he was originally committed to the Mean Green, they likely weren’t the source of the strongest competition to Kansas State. Standing more in the way was both TCU and Virginia. The Horned Frogs were trying for months to pull him away from North Texas but were unsuccessful in doing so. The Wildcats did so at a rapid rate. Spradley-Demps did nearly take an official visit to Charlottesville, though.

3.) While on his official visit to K-State, Spradley-Demps not only acquired comfort with the coaching staff and the campus, but he probably learned the most about the offensive system. He credits that for playing the biggest factor in his decision to join the Wildcats. Being used as a weapon in both the passing game and potentially as a ball-carrier on jet motions is appealing to him. However, he didn’t quickly flip to the Wildcats. He contemplated further additional visits before being convinced by Kansas State assistant Matthew Middleton to shut down his process and pick the Big 12 program in the Sunflower State.

4.) The best part of his game might be the size of his hands and how he attacks the ball in the air. In terms of that trait, he’s pretty far along and advanced in comparison to other receiver prospects at the same stage. Spradley-Demps has also made progress and dramatic improvement in his movement and footwork. Once a bit of a stiff athlete, he’s worked out those kinks and become smoother in and out of his breaks. That will have to be an element of his game that continues to grow, too, just so that he can maintain enough separation. But his great ball skills does make it so that it doesn’t have to be a huge throwing window for him to be effective.

5.) Receivers Phillip Brooks and Seth Porter will be exiting and maybe Jadon Jackson. Assuming no surprises, K-State will return contributors RJ Garcia, Keagan Johnson and Jayce Brown. We’ll see what happens and it will require a quick start, but there should be snaps available at the position if he’s ready to go and can make an instant splash. It would help Spradley-Demps if he were to enroll at Kansas State in January. He is considering it.
