Following visit, 2025 LB updates Alabama commitment status

Following visit, 2025 LB updates Alabama commitment status

For the first time since the retirement of head coach Nick Saban, Brewton (Ala.) linebacker Myles Johnson returned to Alabama’s campus on Tuesday.

Johnson is one of just two Saban-era commits still in the Tide’s 2025 class, the other being running back Anthony Rogers. This was his first time stepping foot on campus this year, but Johnson was seen by multiple Bama coaches, including Kalen DeBoer, during the contact period.

The highlight of Johnson’s trip was meeting with defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.

“It was great,” Johnson told BamaOnLine of his time with Wommack. “I got to talk with him for about ten minutes… basically, he was just saying he’s excited to have me. It’s just the start of getting to know each other. I also caught up with Cayden Jones, one of the guys that I went on a recruiting trip with. He told me that he really likes Coach Kane Wommack, and that they really enjoy playing for him. He’s a really good guy. I’m excited to further our relationship.”

Wommack has done an exceptional job on the recruiting trail thus far. He has helped the Tide land commitments from a trio of linebackers in March, with his defensive scheme resonating with top targets at the position.

Johnson, a top-50 linebacker in the 2025 class, dished out his assessment of Wommack’s coaching style.

“Coach Wommack, he was very energetic. He was very involved,” Johnson said. “He would come up to the linebackers, tell them what they can do wrong and what they can fix. Also, on the flip side, if they did a good job, he’d run up to them and give them a high-five. That was for anybody on the defense, really… just giving energy. That’s always a good sign with the coach.”

Johnson currently plays in a 3-4 defense at T.R. Miller High School. He’s not yet sure where he’d fit into Bama’s 4-2-5 defense as he and Wommack did not get that far in their conversation.

Based on what he saw and heard on Tuesday, Johnson is a fan of the new scheme.

“I love it,” Johnson said. “I heard a lot of good feedback from the guys. They said they can really fly around now. It’s more freedom at the linebacker position. Basically, everybody around can tell that the defense is flying around. They’re getting to the ball pretty quickly. It’s more simple, so they can utilize their abilities and fly to the ball. I’m excited.”

Alabama checked off the boxes that Johnson was looking at

Over the past few months, Johnson has been on campus for both the Nick Saban-led Alabama program and the one with Kalen DeBoer at the helm.

While he could not draw too many comparisons because of the different types of visits he’s been on, Johnson believes the standard is still being upheld at Bama.

“To be honest, I didn’t go to a practice environment while Coach Saban was there, so I can’t really tell about the environment. But I can assume it’s pretty much the same,” Johnson said. “It was very high energy. It was like a learning environment. Every rep, you were taught.

“That was something that I recognized off camp when I went in June; the coaches, they want to make you better each and every play,” Johnson continued. “It’s not like they’re trying to get onto you or anything. They’re just doing their job, they’re coaching really well.”

Reflecting on this trip, Johnson says it checked off all the boxes.

“I feel like I saw the right things I needed to see,” Johnson said. “I heard a lot of good things. I’m pretty firm in my commitment still, and I think that’s where I want to play.”

Now that he’s returned to Tuscaloosa, Johnson does not want to go another multi-month stretch without visiting Alabama. He is planning to return to the school for A-Day on April 13.

Johnson has already connected with a future teammate

As mentioned above, the Crimson Tide added three linebackers to their 2025 class in March. Those were Abduall Sanders, Darrell “Duke” Johnson, and Luke Metz. All joined forces with Bama in a five-day span from March 20-24.

Johnson, however, has no issue with Alabama loading up on linebackers this cycle.

“You know, coming into Bama, you’ve got to expect a lot of great players will come,” Johnson said. “These are the guys I’m going to play with, that I’m going to build relationships with… it doesn’t really put any fear in my heart. We all have to come together, and it’s only one goal at the end of the day. We’ve got to be on the same page, so relationships are pretty important when it comes to that.”

He’s actually touched based with one of the commits, and will see him at A-Day in two weeks.

“I talked with Duke Johnson. He reached out to me, so that was pretty cool knowing that he wanted to build a relationship with me,” Johnson said. “We just talked about how people think Alabama is dead and going downhill because Coach Saban left. Although Coach Saban was a great coach, I think we still have a standard and we’ll do our best to continue the standard. We’re just really excited to prove all the people that say Alabama is going downhill wrong.”

Johnson intends on going to see a Florida practice and possibly LSU this spring. Those programs, along with Ole Miss, are the ones pushing the hardest to flip him at the moment.

He’s not yet sure what he’ll do for his official visits, but stated that Alabama will definitely receive one. The in-state junior opened up about why he has stuck with Bama throughout all the changes over the past few months.

“I just believe that there’s a reason Alabama has been Alabama for as many years as they have been,” Johnson said. “I just wanted to stick it out to see the people, the relationships, and get feedback from the players. You can’t really tell if something is going to be good or bad until it actually happens. I was excited to hear a lot of the good things I heard about it. I trust the people who said it.”
