For the Texas staff, a jam-packed recruiting calendar awaits
For the Texas Longhorns — and every other program in college football — recruiting never stops. And that’s reflected in the sport’s jam-packed recruiting calendar.
Steve Sarkisian and staff are tasked with closing out the 2024 high school cycle, continuing to work in the portal and getting ready for Junior Days later this month. And that is just the beginning of a non-stop recruiting calendar.
Here’s a look at some key dates as we move into the new year.
Jan. 3-7: Quiet period for college transfers who plan to enroll in January. Per the NCAA, a quiet period is defined as being a time when colleges can host players but can’t visit them off campus.
Jan. 12-Feb. 3: This is a contact period leading up to the second signing day. The NCSA describes a contact period like this: “Coaches can email, text, call, direct message and generally contact athletes and their parents through any NCAA-approved method. In-person contact can occur on the college campus, as well as at tournaments, at the recruit’s school and home.”
Not only will the Texas staff be out recruiting, but can also can host prospects. This is a time period when most programs have junior day-type events to get a jump start on the upcoming classes, as well as final official visits for the 2024 cycle.
Feb. 4: Quiet period. In-person recruiting on campus is allowed. In-person recruiting off campus is not allowed.
Feb. 5-March 3: Dead period. Communications with recruits is allowed, but in-person recruiting on campus or off campus is not permitted.
The spring always is a busy time on the recruiting calendar
March 4-April 14: Quiet period. In-person recruiting on campus is allowed. In-person recruiting off campus is not allowed. This is a hugely important recruiting window because it takes place while the Longhorns — and pretty much everyone else — has spring practice. It’s a time when getting recruits on campus is crucial because they not only get one-on-one time with coaches, but can watch a team operate in practice and sit in on meetings.
April 15-May 25: Contact period. Once the spring season ends, college coaches will be on the road to evaluate prospects across the country. All told, you get 140 recruiting days to be split among your staff. Head coaches are not allowed to recruit off campus during this window; only assistants. Meanwhile, a program also can host visitors on campus at this time.
May 26-29: Dead period.
May 30-June 23: Quiet period. Look for the Longhorns to host official visits (this was a busy month for them in 2023), prospect camps and 7-on-7 events.
June 24-July 24: Dead period. With the start of preseason practice nearing, college coaching staff’s will get a month to recharge. Again, communications with recruits is allowed, but in-person recruiting on campus or off campus is not permitted. It’s a welcome breather to most coaches and off-field staffers.
July 25-31: Quiet period. This is Texas’ last chance to host recruits before practice begins. It’s a small window so there’s a mad rush by most schools to get the top players on campus. Everyone is scratching and clawing. They won’t get in-person contact with prospects again until the season begins.
