From The Road: Intel on pair of On300 Michigan recruiting targets
*** I spent the first part of my day at Doylesburg (Pa.) Central Bucks East and visited with 2025 On300 offensive lineman Michael Carroll. This was my first in-person meeting with Carroll, and I was expecting a dude that looked like a true interior offensive lineman — I swear On3 recently had him listed at 6-foot-4. However, Carroll towered over me and is much closer to his current 6-foot-6 listing. Carroll has an intriguing frame, and I could easily see him being a guy that starts off as a guard and moves to right tackle later in his career. Michigan values Carroll as a top tier target this cycle, with new Michigan offensive line coach Grant Newsome making a big push.
*** Carroll’s mother went to Michigan State, while his father played football at Penn State. That’s not exactly a pro-Michigan combination. However, Carroll seems extremely genuine about his interest in the Wolverines. I also exchanged some texts with Carroll’s father before I made the trip, and I don’t get the sense that he is going to push Carroll towards the Nittany Lions. As Carroll’s coach told me, this is Carroll’s decision to make. And it’s no secret Michigan has wowed him so far. Carroll has strong relationships with both Newsome, who saw him during the contact period, and new head coach Sherrone Moore, who was previously his primary recruiter. When I asked Carroll where Michigan stood, he was quick to say ‘at the top.’ Michigan is likely to receive an official visit. Carroll mentioned Penn State and Tennessee as other possibilities. Rutgers is the only school that has locked in an OV date.
*** The second half of my day was spent with On300 Atco (N.J.) Winslow Township athlete Cameron Miller. On3 lists Miller as a cornerback, but all of his finalists are recruiting him as a wide receiver, including Michigan. I had a chance to see Miller in the fall, and he started on both sides of the ball. I did like him as a corner, but I can also see him being a big-time threat out of the slot. Miller was very thin in the fall, but he has bulked up about 15 pounds to 170. While Michigan’s offense has been negative recruited as a whole, Miller said he sees himself in the same mold as Roman Wilson and believes he can thrive in the pro-style scheme.
*** Miller recently released his Top 5, which, surprisingly, did not include Penn State, the leader on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. The Nittany Lions did offer him as a defensive back, and it appears things fell through. That means this recruitment is extremely winnable for Michigan. The other finalists in this race are Kentucky, Rutgers, Syracuse and Wisconsin. That’s not exactly a scary group to compete against. Both wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy and the aforementioned Newsome have done a fantastic job of recruiting Miller and building relationships with those around him. Miller visited Michigan last offseason and is looking to plan a visit for the spring. He will also return for an official visit before making his final decision in July.
