ITF EXTRA: Michigan football 7-on-7 intel, 4-star finalist in hoops, and a big man on campus for Dusty May

Michigan football players don’t have to be told what to do in the summer — they stick around and work, understanding the expectations for the program and what they need to do to compete for playing time. Their informal workouts include voluntary 7-on-7s and more, and some of our spotters have been on hand to witness the action.

As we’ve reported here, no quarterback came out of spring with an edge — in fact, many believed Jack Tuttle (who missed every practice with an injury) would be right there when he came back. Head coach Sherrone Moore told us he’d heard good things about his 7th-year senior and how he was throwing the ball weeks ago. Now, Tuttle is actively partaking in the informal 7-on-7s (even recruits over the weekend were on hand to witness some of it), and from what we’ve picked up, he’s slinging it.

One on hand — a person extremely familiar with great quarterback play — offered this unsolicited opinion:

“[Tuttle] was out there this weekend and was better than [the others] by a lot,” he said, noting Alex Orji and veteran Davis Warren ran a lot with the ones, too.

As we said in our last ITF, this appears to be a three-man race, and it’s wide open. At this point, though — based on everything we’ve heard — if the season started today, we’d expect to see some sort of platoon between Tuttle and Orji.

That said … there’s still a lot of summer left.

On the basketball side, class of 2025 four-star shooting guard Dorian Jones of Richmond Heights, Ohio has a final four of Ohio State, Rutgers, Missouri, and Michigan. He’s unofficially visited U-M, though that was with the last staff.

According to the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, Jones is ranked as the No. 72 overall prospect in the 2025 cycle. He’s also the No. 18 shooting guard and the No. 2 player in Ohio. The pick, from what we’ve heard, will come between two schools — Ohio State and Rutgers. There’s been some pressure for the Buckeyes to take him, we’ve heard … regardless, it won’t be Michigan.

But U-M head coach Dusty May and his staff have done an outstanding job with several other class of 2025 recruits, in great shape with many of them. Watch for an article on where things stand with the rising seniors in the next couple days.

Finally, May’s basketball players are arriving and working out, and our spotters have seen a few in action. One elite basketball mind recently saw Yale transfer Danny Wolf in action and was impressed with his stroke.

“I don’t know if he’s Mo Wagner or Kevin Pittsnogle, but he can shoot it,” our observer said.

He’s shown great footwork, too, and he’s going to be a big part of May’s first team. The coach has earned extremely high marks for his work ethic in the early going, with one going so far to say, “he won’t be outworked.”

We’ll have more on this in the next few days, as well. At this point, it appears May will bank the last available scholarship to next year, happy with the team he has now.
