Jarquez Carter, local DL, earns Gators offer, bonds with new assistant
Jarquez Carter’s visit to Florida on Saturday for junior day went about as well as the 2025 defensive lineman from Newberry (Fla.) could have hoped.
He enjoyed himself, learned more about new defensive line coach Gerald Chatman and, most important, left for home with a new offer.
“It means a lot being able to get an offer from my hometown team,” Carter told Gators Online. “Being able to sit down and talk with Coach (Billy Napier) and have him offer. He said he’s always been a fan of my game. Wanted to see me grow as a player. He said he loved all the hard work I’ve put in and all the leadership he’s seen. It made me feel great, him telling me that one on one.”
Carter recorded 68 total tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 9 sacks and 16 QB hurries in 2023. To date, the 6-foot-2, 280-pound standout now holds 27 offers, with Florida and Southern California being the most recent.
For Carter, this was his first face-to-face with Chatman.
Jarquez Carter enjoyed meeting a new Gators assistant
“I liked him a lot,” Carter said. “Me being around him the whole day, us kind of connecting. I think we had a great time. He called a week before that Monday and was seeing if I was coming. He said he loves the way I get off the ball. And he said he loved how violent my hands are and the depth of my moves — my pass rush.”
Although other major programs offered before Florida, Carter said the Gators are not too late to the party.
In fact ….
“I’ll probably be back for a spring practice and an (official visit),” he said. “They’re a big factor. But honestly, right now I don’t have any top schools. I’m probably going to put out a top 10 or a top 8 in the next month.”
What has Florida in the mix?
“I’d say the defensive linemen they produce,” Carter said.
Overall, Carter seemed to be impressed by his junior day experience in Gainesville.
“It was a great visit, had a great time,” Carter said. “I went with two of my teammates. The best part was going over the nutrition side of it.”
Carter next plans to visit Miami on Jan. 27.
Carter does not yet have a rating from On3.
