Kyle Busch apologizes after yet another late wreck in Brickyard 400

Kyle Busch apologizes after yet another late wreck in Brickyard 400

For significant stretches of Sunday’s Brickyard 400 race at Indianapolis it looked like Kyle Busch might finally be able to shake off the rust and secure a quality finish.

He was in the top five sporadically throughout the day and was pushing Denny Hamlin for fifth with three laps to go when disaster struck yet again.

Busch went into Turn 3 very low, forcing him up the track as he began rounding the bend. That sent him into Hamlin’s left side, causing Busch to spin out, come around and hit the outside wall.

It ended his day.

After the race, Busch opened up on the day by taking to Twitter.

“Got right where we wanted to b w a good car and some really good pit calls,” Kyle Busch wrote. “I’m really sorry to all my guys and RCR for crashing while trying to b aggressive and get them a top 5 finish. Ready for this two wk break. Really need it.”

Need it might be an understatement. Busch has been on the driest spell of his career this season.

He has a career-long 43 race winless streak going, while playoff contention is in massive jeopardy at this point. He has recorded a DNF in six of his last eight races, a remarkably poor stretch for the two-time Cup Series champion.

If Kyle Busch is going to get it together, it needs to be fast. And it very well may need to be a win at this point, with Busch more than 110 points off the playoff cut line currently.

At least some in the NASCAR sphere don’t see it happening.

“What have you seen that makes you think he’s gonna win a race?” Denny Hamlin said this week on his Actions Detrimental podcast. “Can he win a race? Yes, absolutely. But not like legitimately. He’s not gonna win one legitimately and that’s just a fact and I apologize to the Kyle Busch fans listening, but we have to be honest with ourselves.

“I’m not putting this on Kyle, trust me I’ve been teammates with him, the guy is elite. He’s great. But you gotta show that you can at least consistently run in the top-five to even have a chance to win, and we haven’t seen that lately.”

Indeed, Busch’s last top-five finish came back at the Dover Motor Speedway on April 28.

But he’ll get two weeks now to regroup ahead of the Aug. 11 Cook Out 400 in Richmond, Va. Perhaps that can produce a turnaround.
