MBB Recruiting Tidbits: LSU’s push for multiple top-tier talents
LSU has remained busy this summer building Matt McMahon’s program for 2025 and beyond and there’s plenty to talk about as we approach the end of June. The Bengal Tiger On3 spoke with sources throughout the past week to get a feel about LSU’s potential approach to these summer months with the 2025 class and here are a couple of in-depth notes to pass along.
Lewis’ official visit goes well
Nyk Lewis completed his official visit to LSU on Tuesday afternoon and headed back to Washington D.C. the 6-foot-1 point guard prospect spent two days with the Tigers coaching staff and team, taking in everything LSU had to offer. Despite there not being a football game or classes going on, it was the perfect scenario for Lewis to take in the visit, sources tell the Bengal Tiger On3. Lewis came with his mom and dad and just wanted to learn about LSU since it was their first time.
The official visit was scheduled a few weeks ago as the staff continued to pursue some of the top point guards in the country. Lewis is a hot commodity on the east coast especially, so getting him on campus during this period when he had some time was valuable. Lewis is described as a great kid who is focused on basketball and not the rest of the amenities, which was right in LSU’s wheelhouse.
Lewis is the No. 37 player in the country and the No. 6 point guard in the 2025 class. He had a strong showing at the NBAPA Top 100 Camp and was ranked as the No. 6 player in the entire camp by On3 after Day 2 two weeks ago.
As I’ve said before, the net is being cast wide for these top point guards and I think between Lewis, Mikel Brown, Jalen Reece, and now King Grace (who just started his official visit), the Tigers are intent on getting one of those guys in this class.
Chris Cenac’s stock skyrockets
On3 Five-star forward Chris Cenac stole the show at the NBAPA Top 100 Camp two weeks ago in Orlando and the entire LSU coaching staff was there to take it in. Cenac led the camp in rebounds (11.4) and finished third in blocks (1.6) while also averaging 18.6 points, being named the MVP of the camp.
LSU and Houston have been the primary two programs recruiting Cenac heavily over the past year and he’s been on multiple unofficial visits to LSU since he’s from New Orleans. However, the secret is out now. Every team in the country not only knows about Cenac, but is now recruiting him heavily after offering after his showing in Orlando. From sources I’ve talked to, he’s now a consensus top 10 player in the country amongst the coaching community (something On3 was on a month ago, ranking him No. 6 in the class).
Cenac heads to Link Academy for his senior year after spending three years at Newman in New Orleans and I’m told it doesn’t change too much from LSU’s perspective since he already has a strong relationship and has visited multiple times. Now, it’s about setting up that official visit date, which will be complicated as every team in the top 25 will want to get him on campus as well. Still, LSU and Houston have been at the top for a long time and they are going to get the inside track at least going into the fall. Where it goes from there? We’ll have to wait and see.
Moving forward
Once Grace is done with his visit this week, LSU should be done with official visits over the summer. The rest will be saved for the fall where the Tigers can take players to football games and really show them the environment in Baton Rouge to pair with the basketball program Matt McMahon is building.
There have not been any new additions to the official visitor dates yet. I have Jalen Reece scheduled for Sept. 21 and Jasir Rencher locked in for Oct. 12. The rest of the targets like Cenac, Brown, Shelton Henderson, Nate Ament, Colt Langdon, BJ Davis-Ray, and others are still setting their fall schedules at the moment, but we’ll see who the Tigers can get on campus.
