Miami 2024 commit sets first return visit of fall, says he is ‘100% locked in with the Canes’ but will take one other visit

Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin three-star offensive lineman Deryc Plazz hasn’t returned to Miami since the Hurricanes’ end-of-July recruiting barbecue, but the 6-foot-5, 280-pound commit is ready to change that this weekend.

Plazz, who this summer was listed as one of the most well-regarded under-the-radar prospects in this year’s recruiting class by an anonymous Power Five staff member in an article by On3 National College Football reporter Matt Zenitz, committed to Miami July 7 after decommitting from Penn State roughly a month earlier. He only visited Miami twice this summer — once for an official visit and again for the end-of-summer recruiting barbecue — but his relationship with the Hurricanes’ staff has remained strong.

Plazz said he’s remained locked in with Miami, and he plans to return this weekend for the Hurricanes’ Saturday game against Clemson.

“My relationship with them has been great throughout the recruiting process, and it’s only gotten better now that I’m committed,” Plazz said. “I’m 100% locked in with the Canes. I like the product that’s been put on the field so far this year. The last two games have been a little rough, but there are still flashes of what’s to come in the future. I didn’t commit to Miami because I think we’re winning a national championship this year; I feel like coach (Cristobal) is building towards that, and I want to be one of the first few pieces that he’s building with. I’ve seen what I needed to see from the team.”

Florida State and Kentucky have both worked to flip Plazz, but he said he “hasn’t really been budging or anything like that.” He said he plans to visit Florida State for the Miami game Nov. 11 and plans to have “some conversations” with the Seminoles at the Miami game, but he has no plans to visit any additional schools.

He said he wanted to attend Miami’s game against Clemson because he knew it would be one of the Hurricanes’ biggest home games of the season along with their Sept. 9 contest against Texas A&M, and he wanted to experience the environment. He also expects Clemson to be a signature win for head coach Mario Cristobal.

“I know the environment is going to be crazy,” Plazz said. “I wanted to be there for this big win for coach Cristobal. I know it’s going to be a big win for him and a big win for the program under him, so it’s something that I want to experience.”

CaneSport’s Take

Plazz’s recruitment isn’t formally shut down, but at this point, it might as well be. There’s little reason to think he could sign elsewhere this fall barring something drastic and unexpected happening.
