Miami Hurricanes P Dylan Joyce another true freshmen making a big impact: “I don’t put too much pressure on myself”

He’s not covered in tattoos. He’s not 26 years old, the oldest player on the team by far. But Dylan Joyce does have something in common with former flamboyant Miami punter Lou Hedley, and we’re not talking about them both being from Australia. Joyce, like Hedley, is getting the job done on the field.

And while perhaps Miami fans are enamored with other freshmen in Joyce’s class like DL Rueben Bain, OL Francis Mauigoa, RB Mark Fletcher, WR/KR Ray Ray Armstrong and TE Riley William, Joyce has pretty much had as big an impact on games as any of the above.

“Just all the preparation that we’ve done for the whole year, that helps,” Joyce said. “I’ve just had fun all year, go out there kicking the ball around. I don’t feel like I have too much pressure on me. I don’t put too much pressure on myself.”

Joyce says he is in contact with Hedley a few times a week.

“It’s been good,” Joyce said.

Joyce’s biggest adjustment to the States?

“Theres been a lot,” Joyce said. “Just the American culture compared to Australia. The tipping, that was a big one. In Australia you don’t need to tip, it’s all included in the bill.

“Just how people talk. Just getting used to the lingo, that kind of stuff

Joyce has punted 23 times, so less than three times per game, and he’s averaging a solid 42.4 yards per punt with 11 of the 23 fair caught, two going 50+ yards and 12 inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

“This year’s gone pretty well so far,” he says. “I’ve adapted pretty well.”

Joyce is simply getting the job done in Year 1 at Miami, and look for that to continue heading to NC State and beyond.

“NC State is a really good team,” Joyce said. “Obviously we are bowl eligible now, looking forward to a bowl game. But we’re not setting our sights too far.”
