Mix in a Water Monday: Perry Orth reflects on South Carolina’s loss against Texas A&M
Former South Carolina QB Perry Orth joins Gamecock Central’s Mike Uva for this week’s episode of Mix in a Water Monday. WATCH ABOVE
The two take a deeper look into South Carolina’s loss against Texas A&M including Orth’s thoughts on the offense.
“You could see that the message was to get rid of the ball and not to take negative plays,” said Orth. “Don’t take sacks. When you get behind the sticks like that it kills any offense.”
With a banged up offensive line going up against the number one ranked pass rush in the country, the Aggies gave USC fits at times. Texas A&M’s defense finished with four sacks and ten tackles for loss. They also were able to force three intentional grounding penalties.
“There were a few times where (Spencer Rattler) was pinned and had nowhere to go so he just launched it. You can’t get out of everything. One thing I try to train my quarterbacks to do is once you hit the top of your drop and you start to get outside of the pocket, go. Don’t stop and try to come back across the field. A lot of times it doesn’t workout well. Just stay outside of the pocket and either throw it away or run. The other thing is when you’re at the top of your drop you want to work up into the pocket if possible. It’s really challenging to set then to get outside just because of how fast and how talented and athletic those defensive ends and outside backers are at that level. It really puts a strain on not only your tackles but it’s hard to get out and around and then make a play.”
