NC State Newsstand: Football announces end of season awards
NC State’s regular season ended with a four-game winning streak, and it honored several players in its annual awards ceremony earlier this week.
Graduate linebacker Payton Wilson, the Bednarik and Butkus Award winner, walked away with The Governor’s Award, which is given to the team’s most valuable performer. He also won the Leader of the Hunt Award (special contributor to the program) and the Bill Cowher Award (linebacker of the year).
While Wilson was highly decorated, so was freshman wide receiver Kevin Concepcion, who took home three awards. Concepcion earned the Philip Rivers Freshman of the Year, Garry Rowe Receiver of the Year and the Torry Holt Award for the Offensive Most Valuable Player.
Senior defensive end Savion Jackson left with a pair of awards: the Ken McNeill Iron Wolf Award (comeback from injury) and the Bob Warren Award for integrity and sportsmanship.
Other major awards included junior defensive end Davin Vann winning the Cary Brewbaker Award for Defensive Lineman of the Year and junior cornerback Aydan White received the DeWayne Washington Award for Defensive Back of the Year.
Eight others won awards as well.
Freshman defensive lineman Isaiah Shirley earned the Hungry Wolf Award (nutritional improvement) and the Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year, while freshman running back Coleson Fields won Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year and Keyaan Abdul-Rahim was named Special Teams Scout Player of the Year.
Graduate quarterback Brennan Armstrong won two awards: the Ted Brown Award for Offensive Back of the Year and the Al Michaels Award (team before self).
Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Jacarrius Peak earned a pair of awards, too. He won the Alpha Rising Award for most improved player and the Jim Ritcher Award for Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Graduate long snapper Joe Shimko won the Predominant Impact in the Community Award, fresh off his Patrick Mannelly Award, which honors the best long snapper in college football. It was his second time winning the community service award.
Football Chief of Staff Adam Clark won the Wolfpack Spirit Award, while junior safety Sean Brown took home the Michael J. Hardy Award (player with a winning attitude). Junior defensive end Red Hibbler earned the Bo Rein Award for vital contribution in an unsung role.

Quote of the day
NC State men’s basketball’s bench has provided a luxury of depth this season. Sophomore guard LJ Thomas has been a key piece recently as his role has grown within the Pack’s bench unit.
“He’s starting to get a groove,” Keatts said of Thomas. “The one thing that can always help you is sitting on that bench will make you get a little bit motivated. I think LJ is starting to get motivated.”
