Newsstand: Notre Dame could take home these individual awards
This week, three players and one position group on Notre Dame were named semifinalists for various end-of-season awards. One coach, defensive coordinator Al Golden, was nominated for a prestigious honor as well.
Golden was named a nominee for the Broyles Award, which honors the best assistant coach in the nation.
Graduate quarterback Sam Hartman, graduate defensive tackle Howard Cross III and graduate long snapper Michael Vinson are semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien Award (best quarterback), Chuck Bednarik Award (defensive player of the year) and Patrick Mannelly Award (best long snapper), respectively.
Finally, the Irish offensive line is one of 12 semifinalists for the Joe Moore Award, which recognizes the top offensive line in college football.
“They are more than their talented LT [Joe Alt],” the Joe Moore Award voting committee said about Notre Dame. “Scrappy unit that had some growing pains at times, but as the season wore on, even with some moving pieces, they were asked to carry the load for the offense and they did. Not sure they move on from here, but from a body of work standpoint, they make the cut.”
The winner of these awards will be announced after the season.

Could there be a snow bowl this weekend against Wake Forest?
Looking at the forecast, probably not.
Quote of the day
“There’s some realities to it. I swear, if you all would’ve looked at it, in a man game — because I did, I tried to keep up with [Notre Dame football communications director] Katy [Lonergan] and make sure of what you guys [write], because I respect your all’s job piece of it and questions — you lose play actions when it becomes pieces of a man game. And that’s what that game was.
“So, there’s no eye conflict. If I’m guarding [The Athletic Notre Dame beat writer] Pete [Sampson], I’m guarding Pete. So, what’s happening in action throws? [Sampson: ‘They don’t care.’] Exactly. So, we lost that some.”
