Newsstand: Warde Manuel staying in Ann Arbor to tend to ‘important matters’ with football
The Michigan Wolverines are working on their defense against the Big Ten potentially laying down a pre-emptive suspension on the football program as the NCAA investigates an alleged illegal scouting operation in Ann Arbor. Michigan leadership is taking the matter seriously, and it will call for athletic director Warde Manuel to make a big change to his schedule this week.
Given what’s going on at Michigan, Manuel announced Monday he will not travel to Dallas this week for College Football Playoff rankings and deliberation as he helps tend to the U-M response to potential Big Ten action.
“I want to provide an update regarding my participation with the College Football Playoff Committee this week,” Manuel said in a statement. “I will not be traveling to our weekly meeting in Dallas but instead will stay in Ann Arbor, attending to important matters regarding the ongoing investigation into our football program. I look forward to being back in the room with my fellow committee members next week and every week through the end of this season.”
Given the time left in the regular season and the fact that the CFP rankings reveal mostly serve as discussion fodder, it makes sense for Manuel to stick around and be a part of the Michigan response. On the field, the Wolverines will play games the rest of the way at Penn State and Maryland and home against Ohio State. Saturday’s game in Happy Valley kicks off at 12 p.m. ET on FOX.

Michigan quote of the day
“Dad, how long do you coach, when you know to stop coaching. And he said, ‘I’ll tell you boys, here’s what you do. You coach as long as you possibly can. You coach until you get to the point where you don’t feel like you can coach another day, you can’t make another script, you can’t go out to the practice field. And that’s when you know, when you get to that point, coach for two more years.’
“That’s the advice he gave me …. Yeah, it seems like great advice. Great advice, and it’s, I’ve shared that advice. I don’t keep that to myself. Different coaches that retire. I always tell congratulations, and then just gotta give you this perspective from Jack Harbaugh.”
