Notes, observations from Alabama’s Thursday practice in California

CARSON, Calif. – Alabama continued its on-site prep for the Rose Bowl semifinal on Thursday afternoon, taking part in its third California practice. The Crimson Tide spent two hours on the practice fields at Dignity Health Sports Park, home of the MLS’ LA Galaxy.

Below are some quick observations from the media viewing period of Thursday’s practice.

– Running back Jase McClellan (foot) was not in a black jersey and participated in every drill that we were able to watch. Both McClellan and head coach Nick Saban have provided positive updates on the senior tailback, who missed the SEC Championship Game due to injury, and barring a setback, it seems as though McClellan will be good to go on Jan. 1.

– I did not see defensive back Earl Little during the media viewing window. Little has dealt with an injury since the Kentucky game and was spotted in a sling before the Crimson Tide’s home finale against UTC. Another defensive back, DeVonta Smith, appeared to be limited as he watched most drills from off to the side. Smith missed nine games due to injury.

– Speaking of defensive backs, there was a noteworthy visitor at Thursday’s bowl practice as USC transfer Domani Jackson watched defensive back drills while reporters were allowed to observe the workout. Alabama and Michigan, which is also practicing in Southern California, are the leaders in Jackson’s second recruitment, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

– Multiple early enrollees also took part in Thursday’s practice. We got our first look at Five-Star Plus quarterback Julian Sayin, who was wearing a No. 7 jersey and helmet. No updated roster was provided, so all of the newcomers were not identified. BamaOnLine reported Wednesday that Sayin and tight end Caleb Odom have stood out in bowl prep.

“It’s extremely early, but he’s done a nice job for us and I expect him to continue to grow in the program in the offseason,” said Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees of Sayin.

– Former Michigan assistant coach George Helow was, as expected, at Thursday’s practice and was around the Tide’s linebackers, which he coached for the Wolverines from 2020-21. Saban said Helow served as a special assistant to the head coach after the SEC title game.

*** What’s next: Alabama defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and select players will speak to reporters Friday morning at the Sheraton Grand Los Angeles starting at 9:15 a.m. PT.
