On300 WR JJ Harrell excited about Jeff Lebby hire, future at Mississippi State

JJ Harrell is the highest-rated member of Mississippi State’s 2024 recruiting class, now under the reins of first-year head coach Jeff Lebby.

Lebby, who replaces Zach Arnett at the helm of the Bulldogs, has previous play-calling stints at Central Florida, Ole Miss, and most recently, at Oklahoma. His offensive background is already garnering the attention of keystone recruits like Harrell.

The On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 30-ranked wide receiver out of Sardis (Miss.) North Panola High School in State’s backyard is locked in with his commitment to Mississippi State — and is even more excited about what the future in Starkville will look like under Lebby’s watch.

“Coach Lebby is a great offensive coach,” Harrell told On3 on Sunday after the hiring was announced by the university. “He gets his receivers the ball and his offenses score 40 points per game. That alone should make any receiver in the country want to play for him.”

“I’m excited about the hire and I’m looking forward to next season,” he added in.

Harrell flipped his commitment from Tennessee to Mississippi State over the summer after both the Bulldogs and the Ole Miss Rebels turned up the heat on one of the Magnolia State’s best recruits.

With Lebby’s hiring in place, the On300 pass-catcher confirmed that he’s bound for Starkville. He graduates next month and will be on campus in January.

Despite pushes from rival SEC schools over the fall, Harrell’s sights are set on Mississippi State.

“My recruitment is shut down and I’m staying loyal to my commitment,” Harrell, the No. 188 player country, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, explained. “It’s been that way for a long time. I’m a firm believer in the fact that being a good person goes a long way. I’m looking forward to next year already. Hail State!”

Harrell is the No. 5-ranked recruit in the state of Mississippi for this 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies
