Penn State replenishes interior offensive line depth with pickup of Michael Troutman: Commitment impact

Penn State football added to its Class of 2025 on Sunday when Michael Troutman picked the program. The 6-foot-2, 275-pound interior offensive lineman chose the Nittany Lions over Rutgers and Duke. However, the Scarlet Knights appeared to be the only legitimate threat to the Lions landing the 6-foot-2, 275-pound three-star. He visited Piscataway four times, Durham once, and State College a recruitment-leading four times. Those trips helped ensure he was familiar with future position coach Phil Trautwein and vice versa. It all led to him becoming the program’s 11th verbal commitment in the current recruiting cycle.

Troutman will be a candidate to become one of the class’ biggest risers with a strong spring and an impressive senior season. He is the No. 649 player overall, No. 67 interior offensive lineman, and No. 24 player in New Jersey, according to the On3 Industry Rankings. The DePaul Catholic standout is a three-star by On3, as well, though he does not yet have a national ranking, as is typical for many prospects who are still coming onto the radar in this cycle. The lineman has long been on the Lions’ watch list, of course. They offered him last May and then hosted him for the Lasch Bash, which was the first signal that the program was highly interested.

“My biggest thing with Coach Traut is how realistic he is,” Troutman told BWI last summer. “He doesn’t sugarcoat anything and tells you things how they are. Something unique about him and what makes him such a great coach is that he not only teaches you about the game of football, but also different things about life as well. It’s been a great experience building a relationship with him.”

What is Penn State getting in Michael Troutman?

Troutman shows mauler capabilities on film. He is a guard for his high school team. But, the new Penn State commitment projects as an interior offensive lineman who could suit up at guard or center at the college level. While he didn’t commit nearly as early, the Lions would love nothing more than for Trouman to follow a path that is even somewhat similar to the one new five-star enrollee Cooper Cousins did. Making that sort of a leap will be a tall task. But, certainly there is plenty for work with and at worst, Troutman provides interior depth that will be needed in 2025 and beyond.
