Previewing decision day for 3-star TE Micah Jones
Three-star recruit Micah Jones of Madison Central (Miss.) is one of the top tight end prospects in the South. And Friday, he will make one college program and its fan base happy.
That’s the day Jones will announce his commitment decision.
These are his listed finalists: Arkansas, Florida, LSU, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
As his decision nears, the Gators are the favorites in the ON3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.
Here’s a quick preview of Jones’ commit announcement:
TIME: Approximately 6:3-7 p.m. ET.
HOW: School ceremony/Social media. You can find him on X here: @MicahJones23
RANKING/RATING: Jones, listed at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, is the No. 28 tight end and No. 500 overall recruit nationally for the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He holds an 88.03 rating in the On3 Industry and is an 89 with On3, which has him as the No. 27 tight end in the class.
THE 411: The Gators offered Jones last August and almost immediately became a factor in his recruitment. But by then, he already claimed offers from in-state programs Mississippi State and Ole Miss. A month later, Jones attended the Florida-Tennessee game at The Swamp. Then, he returned in January for another unofficial with the Gators. By then, it was clear Billy Napier’s program was heavily in the mix. “I love Florida,” Jones told Gators Online. “It’s a very good vibe around here. I liked the visit today. I got more of a family like visit today, more behind the scenes.”
Ole Miss generated some chatter early in the year. In fact, on Feb. 15 the Rebels led for Jones with a 95.2% chance to land him in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. But then Jones made another trip to Gainesville to watch Florida practice. And one of the players he monitored closely was fellow Mississippi native and freshman running back, Kahnen Daniels. Daniels provided Jones with good insight into the program, and the Gators continued to rise.
When the summer arrived, Ole Miss no longer was seen as being much of a factor. Instead, all eyes were on Florida, Arkansas, LSU and Mississippi State. By the time Jones officially visited the Gators from May 31-June 2, they were viewed as the possible favorite. His official only seemed to solidity his affection for the program and he named them his leader in his exit interview.
RECRUITING PREDICTION MACHINE: The ON3 Recruiting Prediction Machine favors Florida with a projection rate of 93.5 percent.
FLORIDA IN THE ON3 RANKINGS: The Gators entered Friday with the No. 60 class.
WHY IT COULD BE FLORIDA: Relationships, culture fit, tight end usage. He’s particularly close with co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Russ Callaway.
WHY IT COULD BE SOMEONE ELSE: While everything points to Florida being his choice, it’s recruiting so there always is a chance for a surprise. Pulling prospects out of Mississippi never is easy.
OUR PICK: Florida.
