Snap Counts: Iowa Defense
The Iowa defense once again had an inspired effort, holding Michigan to just 213 total yards, a season low for the Wolverines, but it was still a 26-0 loss for the Hawkeyes in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday.
In this feature, we dive into the snap counts from Pro Football Focus to see how much each player was on the field for the Iowa defense this week.
Defensive Line
Logan Lee – 55 snaps
Joe Evans – 54 snaps
Ethan Hurkett – 43 snaps
Yahya Black – 42 snaps
Deontae Craig – 34 snaps
Aaron Graves – 27 snaps
Max Llewellyn – 7 snaps
Brian Allen – 4 snaps
Analysis: Iowa’s defensive line did a good job stuffing Michigan’s running game, allowing only 66 yards on the ground and 1.9 yards per carry, and put quite a bit of pressure on QB J.J. McCarthy with four sacks and 13 pressures. Statistically, Black led the way with five tackles and one sack with Lee and Craig both finishing with three tackles and one sack as well.
Linebacker
Jay Higgins – 66 snaps
Nick Jackson – 57 snaps
Kyler Fisher – 31 snaps
Jaden Harrell – 1 snap
Karson Sharar – 1 snap
Analysis: Higgins led the defense with 14 tackles and now has a total of 155 this season, which is fourth most in Iowa history. Jackson finished with eight tackles, which was third on the team.
Defensive Back
Sebastian Castro – 66 snaps
Deshaun Lee – 65 snaps
Jermari Harris – 65 snaps
Quinn Schulte – 65 snaps
Xavier Nwankpa – 36 snaps
Koen Entringer – 7 snaps
Analysis: Castro led the way in the secondary with nine tackles and one pass breakup in the game. Lee finished with eight tackles while Harris had two and Schulte, Nwankpa, and Entringer each had one.
