Sooners Commit Michael Boganowski is a Big Play Waiting to Happen
Since the return of Brent Venables to Oklahoma the Sooners have had a very different presence in recruiting Kansas and Missouri. That pattern continued on Thursday afternoon with the commitment of Junction City, Kan. star Michael Boganowski. And with his decision it is time to take a look at just what him such a priority for the Sooners defensive staff.
What’s on Tape for Michael Boganowski
There are some guys you watch and can’t think anything but ‘that’s a Brent Venables guy’ and Boganowski is a textbook example. Not just because of his physicality that shows up over and over again but his decision making. When Boganowski sees the play developing, there’s no time wasted in getting down hill.
And when he arrives, he does so with real violence. At least three times in the highlights the new Oklahoma pledge separates the ball carrier, or receiver, from the ball. For a bigger safety that is quite long-levered he doesn’t have a lot of wasted movement and does a solid job with his change of direction.
Boganowski lines up all over the field for Junction City and that diversity of his game is part of his appeal for the Sooners as well. But that unique look shows some ability to be a safety, linebacker, or Cheetah. He figures to start at safety but with such a big frame the Sooners have a lot of ability to put him into his most successful role going forward.
He’s an interesting guy to watch on tape as he looks to play a straight up at times but, again, he changes direction well for a guy his size.
Offensively he shows off some of the ball skills that could have him as a strong safety type who could work on some of the bigger pass-catching tight ends the Sooners are sure to face.
In short, Boganowski is a player who might be called a ‘tweener’ by some but for Oklahoma? He’s a ‘Brent Venables guy’ (BVG – trademark pending).
Sooners Commit Comparison
There’s not the clear cut one that I see some times but there is some comparison with former Beggs, Okla. star and current Oklahoma State standout Kendal Daniels.
