Sooners Impress on Day One in Orlando

Sooners Impress on Day One in Orlando

ORLANDO – Oklahoma’s five signees who have descended on the Under Armour All-American game got started with their game prep on Saturday evening and wasted little time making an impression. The future Sooners did a bit of everything and SoonerScoop.com was on hand to see all of it. Now it’s time for us to weigh in on David Stone and our thoughts on the other four, each of who will be in Norman in a few weeks.

Sooners Offensive Signees

Breakdown: Akinkunmi was a player that most everyone was interested in seeing. He’s not only unique the Sooners but high-major prospects from the United Kingdom don’t show themselves often – particularly against competition this elite. But for a guy just getting his feet under him Akinkunmi looked the part. He moves well, bends naturally at the knee and looked comfortable sliding his feet. Tomorrow we’ll see one-on-ones and then there may be some more answers.

Breakdown: Oklahoma’s California contingent starts and ends with Brooks. But he’s also a player that is, as much as anyone, is familiar with elite competition. Brooks isn’t the biggest blocker out there but he does a good job of getting underneath defenders and moving them around when needed. Saturday was largely about install and we’ll see more of his physicality on Sunday. But he can move his feet and he’s got physicality.

Breakdown: If there was one Sooners pledge that stood out on the hoof, it was Mitchell. Amongst all the other tight ends, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound pass-catcher was an absolute standout. He’ll be at Oklahoma in a few weeks and on Saturday he showed off an aspect of his game the Sooners will take advantage of as soon as possible – his blocking. The Sooners signee is physical and more than willing to latch onto a defender and bury him.

Sooners Defensive Signees

Breakdown: Though he was largely absent from the Under Armour festivities on Friday, Hardy made his presence known during drills on Saturday. As much as any defender on hand Hardy was a guy that was picking up concepts and even, at times, explaining them to teammates. The Sooners future safety had a pair of picks in drills and had some fun with his fellow future OU defender.

Breakdown: Stone wasn’t asked to do a lot in drills as it was largely a night of install for his team. Still though the Sooners five-star commitment looks the part and on the rare occasion he was doing something his hand usage stood out. He’s a physical defender that could fit into a number of roles for Oklahoma.
