South Carolina football Friday notes

A couple of notes to report on South Carolina football that GamecockCentral has been able to gather to share as we head into the weekend:

– Sterling Lucas is the only member of South Carolina’s staff to receive a pay raise today. I’ve been told from team sources there are two reasons for this. The first, several NFL teams have been trying to lure him away from South Carolina. Most recently the Baltimore Ravens, a place he worked at several years ago. The second, his efforts in recruiting have not gone unnoticed, particularly for being able to land 5-star EDGE Dylan Stewart.

– As far as where South Carolina stands on hiring a RB’s coach: The reports of former Texas A&M Marquel Blackwell RB coach being South Carolina’s lead candidate is accurate. What I’ve been told is that at this time it’s “not a done deal,” nor does Blackwell “have a contract in front of him” at the moment. That could change very soon though. A deal could be finalized as early as tonight. If not tonight, I’ve been told since Monday is a holiday that it could drag into Tuesday.

– South Carolina is moving James Coley to WR coach for several reasons. Coley had success with coaching WRs at Georgia as well as Texas A&M. With the WR room being so young/combined with new faces, combined with Coley’s success of coaching WRs in the past, it makes sense.

– Justin Stepp will move to tight ends coach, sources have confirmed with me.
