Texas Longhorns Portal Update: New names emerge
The Texas Longhorns have three players out of the portal in this cycle, so far.
With several needs remaining, Steve Sarkisian and staff are busy working to get a pair of players on campus in the coming days.
Wide receiver
The Longhorns already have one wide receiver transfer on the way in Matthew Golden. And now Texas is making a push for a second.
C.J. Daniels, Lilburn (Ga.) Liberty University
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound receiver hit the portal January 4. Daniels played four seasons with the Flames, and is coming off a monster season, having logged 55 catches for 1,067 yards and 10 touchdowns during the 2023 campaign. In four years, Daniels has racked up 106 catches for 1,954 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Daniels is a possibility to make a visit to Texas this weekend. Daniels is currently on a visit to Auburn, where his former head coach Hugh Freeze is the leading the Tigers program.
Defensive line
Ja’Maree Caldwell, Newberry (S.C.) Houston
The 6-foot-1, 325-pounder is a player the Texas staff knows well. He made three tackles and two sacks against the Longhorns this season. He totaled 27 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss 6.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 2023. His two season totals at Houston were 38 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.
Caldwell, who attended two junior colleges prior to transferring to Houston, has one year left to play.
He entered the Transfer portal December 12, 2023. Caldwell is a possibility to make a visit to Texas this weekend.
Defensive back
The Longhorns could also add another defensive back in the portal. But there is not a timeframe on that. That could be either a safety or nickel, depending on need.
