The Wolfpacker War Room: NC State portal intel, in-home visit notes

A total of 13 players have declared their intentions to transfer away from NC State this offseason, including sophomore quarterback MJ Morris. This is the tough part of the portal window, where fans have to see some of their favorite players decide to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The fun part lies ahead. NC State is already beginning to lay the foundation for an exciting finish to the 2024 recruiting cycle.

When the portal officially opens Monday, Dec. 4, the chaos will truly begin. In addition to recruiting any potential transfers, the coaches are also starting to hit the road for in-home visits, trying to retain their commits and add new talent to the class.

This War Room could not wait until Friday afternoon, so here’s the latest Wolfpack recruiting scoop.

Terrell Anderson

NC State wide receivers coach Joker Phillips will be in Greensboro tonight for an in-home visit with four-star wide receiver Terrell Anderson. The NCAA’s contact window opens at midnight Dec. 1, and, per a source, the Wolfpack assistant intends on making his interest clear from the first moment he is able to.

Anderson’s recruitment continues to swing back-and-forth between Georgia and NC State. That’s a good sign for the Pack. There’s clearly still plenty of mutual interest if the wide receiver and his family are receptive to a midnight visit. I’m going to wait and see the buzz following this in-home visit, but NC State is building some very encouraging momentum. If it continues on its current trajectory, I will be flipping my prediction back to the Pack.

Additional coaching travel intel

Per multiple sources, the coaches will be on the road over the next week to see the following prep and junior college prospects.

*** Junior college offensive tackle Jonah Miller: Offensive line coach Garett Tujague will make the trip out to California to see the priority lineman.

*** Four-star defensive lineman Isaiah Campbell: Cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell will stop by Southern Durham (N.C.) High to see one of the Pack’s top recruiting priorities in the 2025 class on the first day of the contact period.

*** Three-star wide receiver commit Jimmar Boston: Phillips will stop by the pass catcher’s state championship game Saturday afternoon.

*** Three-star offensive tackle Trent Mitchell, three-star offensive lineman Robby Martin and four-star offensive lineman Tyler West: Tujague will stop by to see each of the current class of 2024 commits.

Transfer portal notes

*** There is a lot of momentum building around a potential homecoming for former Maryland defensive back Tamarcus Cooley. NC State can not reach out to him since he is not officially in the portal yet, but multiple sources, including Cooley, have indicated to TheWolfpacker.com that he would have interest in the program if they decided to reach out next week. Over the past few days, I have only heard positive things regarding a reunion with the former top priority nickel prospect from sources outside of the program. Now, the next step is to see if NC State extends an offer next week.

*** Notre Dame center Zeke Correll: It sounds like Tujague will stop by South Bend, Indiana, soon to meet with Correll. The Fighting Irish lineman started the first 10 games of the season at center and likely will be a heavily recruiting prospect out of the portal.

*** Shorter University offensive tackle Alan Herron: Clemson, Penn State and many others have already offered the DII lineman. Tujague is scheduled to visit him in person soon.

*** Wake Forest wide receiver Wesley Grimes declared his intention to enter the portal Thursday with 2 seasons of eligibility remaining. NC State stands out as a potential destination after he heavily considered the program out of Raleigh (N.C.) Millbrook High. It will be interesting to see if the Pack extends an offer once it is able to next week.

Tony Gibson update

It sounds like NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson is attracting plenty of interest from other programs but, unless anything changes, I do not see him leaving the Wolfpack this offseason, which is a major testament to this program.

Anthony Carrie

After checking in with sources this week, I no longer expect Anthony Carrie to commit to NC State. The momentum flipped in his recruitment as Michigan State’s new staff entered the picture. He is visiting the Spartans and Georgia Tech in December. I submitted a Michigan State prediction Thursday night.

Some context for MJ Morris’ transfer and what’s next

MJ Morris officially announced his decision to transfer Thursday but, once he decided to redshirt, I never heard anything that suggested he was going to remain with the Wolfpack. Moving forward, it sounds like NC State will indeed try to add multiple portal quarterbacks this offseason. It is also worth noting that three-star quarterback commit Cedrick Bailey Jr. is a priority prospect for Miami. If he flips, then adding more than one transfer signal-caller becomes a near-necessity.

This weekend’s official visit slate

Here are the prospects scheduled to officially visit NC State this weekend:

*** Three-star linebacker commit Zane Williams

*** Three-star running back commit Isiah Jones

*** Three-star cornerback Benjamin Black

Black has not confirmed his plans to visit this weekend.

NC State adds to its JUCO official visit schedule

NC State locked in three more junior college official visits this week. I am still expecting the Pack to make these prospects a top priority. Aside from the recruits listed below, look for offensive tackle Jonah Miller to set a trip to Raleigh at some point.

*** Cornerback Tyrane Stewart (Dec. 8-10)

*** Cornerback Brylan Lanier (Dec. 8-10)

*** Defensive lineman Malcolm Alcorn-Crowder (Dec. 8-10)

*** Tight end Dante Daniels (Dec. 8-10)

*** Three-star defensive lineman Kemari Copeland (Dec. 14)

*** Linebacker Keaton Thomas (Still scheduling a date)
