Three takeaways on Nebraska landing WR Isaiah Neyor from transfer portal

Three takeaways on Nebraska landing WR Isaiah Neyor from transfer portal

Nebraska has landed a commitment from wide receiver Isaiah Neyor, an acquisition from the transfer portal. Three takeaways:

Huskers’ young WRs could benefit from Neyor’s wisdom

Having spent the past two seasons in powerhouse Texas’ program — a program currently full of elite wideouts — the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Neyor no doubt learned a lot of tricks of the trade.

You have to think a slew of young Nebraska wideouts could benefit from Neyor’s wisdom.

Those young Husker pass catchers might be aware that although Neyor was grounded by an ACL injury at Texas, he enjoyed a strong spring in 2023 — highlighted by a 63-yard catch in the spring game.

“You see the playmaking ability,” Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said then. “He’s a real weapon on deep balls and in the red area he’s a big physical guy.”

Nebraska young WR guns such as Malachi Coleman, Jaylen Lloyd and Jaidyn Doss — who saw action as true freshmen this season — surely can benefit from someone who’s been there, done that.

Neyor’s numbers at Wyoming get your attention

Been there, done that? Well, consider that Neyor, before transferring to Texas, was named as a second-team All-Mountain West Conference choice in 2021 after enjoying a strong sophomore season for Wyoming. He compiled 44 receptions for 878 yards and 12 touchdowns, with his 19.95 yards-per-catch average and 12 receiving touchdowns leading the MWC and ranking sixth and eighth in the FBS, respectively.

In the Big Ten, what with its big and stout defenses, it’s often a bear to score touchdowns in the red zone as the field shortens. Big-bodied receivers can help immensely.

Neyor played in all six games of a 2020 season shortened by the pandemic, recording eight receptions for 248 yards. His 31 yards per catch was on pace to lead the nation had he caught four more passes to meet the NCAA minimum of two per game to be ranked.

For Nebraska fans, his big-play prowess may evoke images of explosive transfer receivers Trey Palmer (14.7 yards per catch in 2022) and Samori Toure (19.5 in 2021).

Nebraska doesn’t return much WR production

Let’s be blunt, Nebraska needs help at WR.

Neyor joins a group of wideouts that didn’t exactly put up big numbers in 2023.

Slot man Billy Kemp, a transfer from Virginia, caught a team-leading 35 passes for 310 yards (8.9 ypc) and one touchdown in his final season of eligibility.

Among Nebraska’s returning wideouts (excluding tight ends), sophomore Alex Bullock was second in the group with 15 catches for 221 yards (14.7 ypc) and a TD. Lloyd had six catches for 237 yards (39.5) and three TDs, while Coleman had eight grabs for 139 yards and a score.

It’s very possible Neyor could come in and be a go-to guy immediately, and possibly the go-to guy — if he has recovered well from the knee issues that kept him out of action for almost all of the last two seasons.
