Thursday’s LSU bowl game practice notes
LSU’s bowl practices continued on Thursday afternoon as the Tigers prepare for Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl. The media was able to watch the first 30 minutes of the practice. Here are the main notes from what I saw.
*** It was the normal starters on both sides of the ball. The only notable absence was Malik Nabers who was still present, but not suited up. Aaron Anderson took his place in the slot and had a lot of reps go his way.
*** Analyst Pete Jenkins was the primary defensive line coach for the entire practice. He was involved in every rep as the defensive line went from drill to drill. Very hands on coach and always enthused.
*** Dashawn Womack and Whit Weeks were not in the starting defense, but they were among the first players rotated in to get first team reps and it looks like they’ll be heavily involved in the game plan vs. Wisconsin.
*** LSU coaches Matt House and John Jancek spent about 15 minutes working along with Harold Perkins on pass rushing moves and hand placement. It was very intentional and Perkins was locked in during that segment. Could this be gearing up towards playing him more as a pass rusher in the bowl game and next year? We’ll see.
*** We never got to see a full 11 vs. 11 today, which makes sense trying to keep guys healthy. Instead we saw the starters face the scout teams who were going at probably 80 percent or so. Really honing in on gameplaning for Wisconsin.
*** Garrett Nussmeier had a nice touchdown pass to Chris Hilton in the corner of the endzone in redzone 7-on-7 work. Andre Sam was in coverage, but it was great offense from those two on the score.
*** Shelton Sampson had another drop in the practice period vs. the scout team. It’s becoming a more prominent question mark moving forward as we’ve seen Sampson drop two passes during the year and a couple of drops just in what we’ve seen this week. He’ll continue to get a ton of reps, so we’ll see how he cleans it up.
