Top-200 Miami DB target encouraged by Hurricanes’ progress: “I like how the coaches are dealing with the DBs and the back end”

Miami (Fla.) Central 2025 four-star defensive back Amari Wallace has quickly emerged as one of South Florida’s top defensive prospects in next year’s recruiting cycle, and Miami is among the programs taking note.

The Hurricanes are among programs making early contact with Wallace, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound hybrid defensive back who projects as a possible nickel back at the next level, and the No. 179 overall prospect in next year’s recruiting cycle has taken note of the progress the Hurricanes have made so far this season. Penn State, USC, LSU, Oklahoma and Tennessee have also made strong early impressions, and he said he’s working to determine his visit schedule for the spring.

He plans on focusing on high school playoffs the remainder of the season, but he’s liked what he’s seen from Miami so far this year. He last visited Miami for the Hurricanes’ Sept. 9 win over Texas A&M.

“I like how the coaches are dealing with the DBs and the back end (of the defense),” Wallace said. “You’ve got (Kam) Kinchens, you’ve got James (Williams), they’re just doing their jobs. UM, they really impressed me this year, because last year they had slowed up, but this year, they’re doing good and they’re doing better.”

Williams still has contact with the Hurricanes’ staff via texts and phone calls, and he could return for another visit to Coral Gables after the season. He last visited Miami’s campus for the Hurricanes’ end-of-July recruiting barbecue, and Miami currently has an estimated 44.1% chance to land Wallace according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Wallace holds more than a dozen offers from programs including Alabama, Colorado, Auburn and Texas and is listed as a four-star prospect by each of the four major recruiting databases. Miami ramped up communication with Wallace Aug. 1, when he began hearing from head coach Mario Cristobal, defensive coordinator Lance Guidry and multiple off-field recruiting assistants.

CaneSport’s Take

Miami has gotten a strong jump on a 2025 South Florida recruiting class loaded with defensive talent, particularly at skill positions. Miami is also off to strong starts with 2025 four-star Booker T. Washington defensive backs Ben Hanks Jr., a Florida legacy, and Antonio Branch.

Cristobal’s staff has established strong ties to Miami Central, so don’t be surprised to see the Hurricanes have a presence at the high school in next year’s cycle and in 2026 even more so than they did in the 2023 and 2024 classes.
