Vernell Brown III breaks down his recruitment with commitment day approaching

With his commitment day set for Sunday, 4-star receiver Vernell Brown III of Orlando (Fla.) Jones is ready to close one chapter of his recruitment.

“I’m really excited,” Brown told Gators Online. “This is what the process is all about. I’m looking forward to making my decision. I’ll be excited to have made the decision and to be committed to a school. It’ll be a relief that the recruiting process is over.”

Brown will announce his decision 2 p.m. ET Sunday with On3. His finalists are Florida, Florida State, Miami and Ohio State. Brown, the No. 33 prospect in the On3 Industry Rankings, officially visited each of those schools. The Gators are the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine favorites.

“Aside from the people at the schools and everything on the field, I’m looking to be developed off the field as a man,” Brown said. “What school has the best opportunities to put me in the best position to be a success in the 40-year aspect.”

Vernell Brown III has respect for UF’s receivers coach

With Florida, receivers coach Billy Gonzales has been an integral part of Brown’s recruitment. And, he speaks highly of the veteran assistant.

“He’s a really good recruiter,” Brown told Gators Online. “It’s all good things I can say about him. Honestly, he checks up on you outside of football just to see how you’re doing and how your family is. They all do, but that’s one thing that stands out about him.”

Brown also is impressed by Gonzales’ player development. Florida receiver Ricky Pearsall was a first-round pick this spring.

“I think his track record is proven,” Brown said. “He’s been in it for a long time. There’s a long list of guys he’s developed and put in the league in all rounds. And he just had a first-rounder.”

Here’s what Brown said about each of his other finalists …

FSU: “It’s just the people I’ve gotten to know through the process. They were on me early and they’re a really good program right now.”

Miami: “The people as well — and their plan. All schools have a plan, but Miami’s plan is really detailed. The people and the plan.”

Ohio State: “Them arguably being Wide Receiver U. All the receivers they’ve developed the past few years in their system. And, you talk about that 40-year aspect as well. They’re a really good option.”
