What I think, what I know: Intel and thoughts on Georgia coaching staff movement

What I think, what I know: Intel and thoughts on Georgia coaching staff movement

A valuable member of Georgia’s on-field coaching staff stepped into a different role on Saturday but it’s not bad news at all. Will Mushcamp, after three years as a Bulldog assistant and 27 years in the profession, is moving from his co-defensive coordinator role to an analyst positoin, making room for Travaris Robinson.

Robinson will step right into Muschamp’s old spot, same title and all, and he’s one of the nation’s top assistant coaches and recruiters. Now that we’ve had some time to think about it, DawgsHQ delivering some thoughts and some facts on the situation.

What I know…

*** This came very close, multiple times, to not working out this way. Trusted sources tell DawgsHQ that Muschamp, at different points, seriously contemplated walking away from the game. His son, Whit, will be a freshman at Vanderbilt this season and Muschamp wants to be around him just like he has been Jackson the past few seasons. I would even go as far as to say that the decision was made, at least at one point, for Muschamp to retire. Obviously minds changed.

*** Based on what I’ve heard, this won’t be your typical analyst job. It’s going to be a little different. One source I spoke with on Saturday told me that they envision it looking more like a consulting/special assistant type of job where the hours are much shorter.

*** Robinson is a really strong fit within this Georgia staff. I’m told that he knows most, if not all, of these coaches from either working with them or running into them out on the road recruiting. There’s a strong rapport even before he gets involved with his first workout or practice at Georgia. One trusted contact told me that, in their eyes, “it almost feels like a long time coming” because of the relationship he has with other coaches on this staff, especially Muschamp.

*** After doing some digging, Robinson to Georgia all but done on Thursday, right around 24 hours after Nick Saban retired. I say “all but” because I don’t want to give anyone the impression that Robinson would still be in Athens had he been given the keys to the Crimson Tide defense. I tend to think that Kalen DeBoer hiring him as the play-calling defensive coordinator would have at least made him think but if you’re looking for a timeline, Robinson was essentially in the fold a couple of days before it was announced based on what we’ve been able to gather.

What I think…

*** Defensive prospects, especially defensive backs, will run into a bit of a recruiting buzzsaw when they walk onto Georgia’s campus. Robinson’s reputation is well-earned. Donte Williams is considered an elite recruiter. The same can be said for Glenn Schumann and Tray Scott. Chidera Uzo-Diribe has shown some serious potential as well. Throw in the fact that Muschamp can also recruit when players are on campus and Georgia is going to be tough to bet against.

*** Robinson’s addition will have an impact beyond the defensive backfield. You look at his track record as a recruiter and you see that he has been involved with elite guys at different positions. Jordan Burch comes to mind and we know how contested that recruitment was. I’m told that he was involved with multiple big-time defensive linemen when he was at Florida and has shown the ability to help recruit the other side of the ball, too. Some guys just have “it” when it comes to the recruiting trail and Robinson is that kind of guy. Rusty and I said it yesterday, T-Rob is one of those guys you don’t like recruiting against.
