Winners and Losers: Turnovers finally help Kansas State

Winners and Losers: Turnovers finally help Kansas State

KSO covers the biggest winners and losers in the world of Kansas State and college athletics.

Winners

1.) Avery: Duh. Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson was the man in Lubbock and scored five times for the Wildcats.
2.) KU: No, not Lance Leipold and company. The Jayhawks lost on the gridiron. It’s almost basketball season and Bill Self and Kansas dodged the penalty bullets. There will be no postseason ban.
3.) Castillo: Sticking with basketball, K-State commit David Castillo was one of the few standouts at Team USA minicamp. Though he doesn’t always light it up at the high school level, and some of that was a product of his team and the attention he garnered at Bartlesville, he shines in settings when the talent around him is significantly higher.
4.) Defense: I’m not here to say that the Kansas State defense is permanently fixed. It’s not. But they substantially increase the margin of error when they can force three turnovers like they did at Texas Tech.
5.) Ward: We can’t let Johnson have all the headlines and spotlight. K-State got a big boost from running back Treshaun Ward. Just like they did at the quarterback spot, the Kansas State coaches made the right decision and rode the hot hand in the backfield.

Losers

1.) Colorado: Most turned off the television screen late on Friday night thinking that Colorado had already sealed the deal against Stanford. Myself, Drew Galloway and Mason Voth certainly did in our hotel room in Amarillo, Texas. Instead, Coach Prime’s group collapsed and completely lost a 29-0 lead to Stanford and fell in double overtime.
2.) Jayhawks: Okay, now it’s Leipold’s turn. Like K-State, Kansas went to Stillwater and came up empty in what is a pretty painful loss for the Jayhawks.
3.) Red Raider fans: The Texas Tech faithful isn’t happy. In what was supposed to be a promising season under Joey McGuire, the Red Raiders are 3-4 and just saw their true freshman quarterback not come close to matching the one trotted out by Kansas State.
4.) Boise State: Just like the Buffaloes did against Stanford, Boise State lost in unfathomable fashion but versus Colorado State.
5.) Lincoln: No, not the capitol of Nebraska. Another coach that didn’t have a great weekend was USC boss Lincoln Riley. Just days after defending coordinator Alex Grinch and the defense, the Trojans allowed 48 points in a blowout loss to Notre Dame in South Bend. Remember, that’s a Fighting Irish offense that wasn’t close to scoring that well.
