WATCH: Casey Woods previews SMU at East Carolina
SMU offensive coordinator Casey Woods met with the media on Sunday to preview Thursday’s matchup at East Carolina. Catch the video for his full remarks and some of what he said below.
East Carolina poses a tough test for the Mustangs, despite a 1-4 record on the season.
“The personnel is good, and particularly in on the defensive line up front,” Woods told reporters. “Their box has got talented players. They’re long, athletic, they’ve got experience. They do a good job staying sound and their gaps and they’re a physical defense. They’ve got a lot of multiplicity. They present to you problems from the way they do that. But similar to maybe like an Oklahoma or TCU, they get to the coverages that they want to. It could look like a lot of different things and then it ends up being what it is they want to do and that’s testament to how they practice and how they perform.”
SMU quarterback Preston Stone is looking to take another step forward as the starter for the Mustangs. He’s continued to work with his playmakers to get ready for the stretch run of AAC play.
“It’ll be a great challenge for us to get in there and make sure that our quarterback sees what he needs to see and train him up on on exactly how we’re going to distribute the football on Thursday night,” Woods said. “He’s always been a great communicator about what he likes about his game, what he likes about our offense and how that fits in and so being able to visit with him last week on that. Give him an opportunity to rest his arm in certain situations. Give him some mental reps and mental days in certain situations and get some valuable reps for those next in line guys that we’re going to have to count on through the course of the season.”
