Latest intel and predictions for Iowa’s big recruiting weekend
The biggest recruiting weekend of the year for the Iowa football team is nearly upon us. The Hawkeyes will host most of their verbal commitments along with ten other uncommitted prospects.
Iowa got things off to a good start on Wednesday when 2025 athlete Mason Woods gave his verbal commitment to the Hawkeyes. He’s likely ticketed for the tight end position once the son of Levar Woods arrives on campus.
That brings us to the upcoming weekend and what might happen. Remember last year when basically everything fell into place. Iowa essentially ran the table and no one associated with the program thought that might happen in that fashion, yet it did. As Director of Recruiting Tyler Barnes has said, there is such thing as recruiting momentum and Iowa had it last year on this critical weekend.
There have also been big recruiting weekends that were duds as well. Prospects just didn’t click and the results were mediocre at best. This weekend won’t make or break this class, which is worth noting, as the class is expected to be smaller than normal. But, the Hawkeye coaches wouldn’t mind getting most of the hay in the barn when it comes to their 2025 recruiting efforts.
One name fell off the list of visitors on Wednesday when Maguire Richman, the younger brother of current Iowa offensive lineman Mason Richman, verbally committed to Kansas State. It appeared that he was leaning that direction heading into the weekend and Mason Richman was going to be out of town at a wedding this weekend, which kind of signaled that his brother was headed elsewhere.
Before we dive into the visitors that could be on commitment watch, there is a bit of an Iowa vs. Kansas State recruiting rivalry with the Class of 2025. Also scheduled to visit Iowa this weekend is three star lineman Brock Heath. He’s a Kansas City area product and close to the younger Richman, so it might be an uphill battle for the Hawkeyes.
The other player who seems to be down to Iowa and Kansas State is Lucas Allgeyer, a three star offensive tackle prospect. Allgeyer has some family ties to Iowa, including his cousin playing baseball for the Hawkeyes. It does feel like Iowa has better odds here than the On3 RPM currently suggests. The question is can they close the deal this weekend?
Who are a couple of prospects that we think might be on commitment watch this weekend?
One is Cameron Herron, a three star lineman from Indiana. While Notre Dame appears to be still recruiting him, Herron might be close to making a decision. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him and his recruitment and pick the Hawkeyes.
Another lineman that might be leaning Iowa’s direction heading into this weekend is Brad Fitzgibbon, a three star defensive lineman from Illinois. He recently took an official visit to Michigan State, but Iowa has pretty strong ties to Marist High School and it feels like the Hawkeyes could be landing him if the visit goes well.
Those are two players we feel pretty good about when it comes to Iowa’s chances headed into the weekend.
One name that will be interesting to watch is 6-foot-4 wide receiver prospect Terrence Smith. He’s a four star prospect out of Illinois and survived a trip to Minnesota and the high pressure tactics of P.J. Fleck. Iowa leads going into the weekend, according to On3’s RPM. Obviously, he would be a very significant get if the Hawkeyes land his verbal pledge.
A couple of other prospects are very hard to read, but one name that we will continue to watch is in-state four star offensive lineman Nick Brooks. The On3 RPM has it as a race between Iowa and Georgia. At one point, the 6-foot-7 and 360 pound tackle was committed to the Hawkeyes before opening things back up. So far he has visited USC, Texas, and Georgia. Best guess is he makes a decision sometime this summer.
That’s where we sit heading into the biggest recruiting weekend of the year. We feel good about Iowa’s chance with a pair of prospects. They are potentially getting warm with another, and several others that are somewhat uncertain.
