SMU’s push for an impressive recruiting finish continues

SMU Football continues its push for a strong finish to the 2024 recruiting class as the Mustangs also ready for transfer portal season. What’s the latest?

Barring something crazy, we expect SMU’s push to center around three prospects.

Tyler (Tex.) four-star athlete Derrick McFall: The UCLA commit was on SMU’s campus for an official visit when the Mustangs took on Charlotte. Running backs coach Khenon Hall continues to turn up the heat on him and McFall remains in contact. With Tyler’s season over, now we’ll see if he makes his way out to Los Angeles. SMU’s right in the mix to land him and might have to weather the storm of a UCLA official visit, but the Mustangs have a lot going for them. Still, this one has dragged out a little more than the staff probably would’ve liked. We don’t know which way it’ll go, but it’d be a heck of a land to add someone to that versatile slot/gadget spot.

North Crowley (Tex.) defensive lineman Sterlin Brooks: The TCU commitment was someone the staff went and saw earlier this year. The Mustangs are still working on the three-star prospect after he committed to the Frogs this summer. This one might take all the way until the signing period to see how it plays out, but don’t count out the Mustangs just yet. If SMU can finish strong and TCU struggles more, that could help as well. With losses coming on the defensive line, getting Brooks would help solidify the position overall. If TCU makes some staff changes, that’d add to SMU’s chances. We’re not expecting him to flip, but it’s a possibility.

Lancaster (Texas) four-star running back Kewan Lacy: The former Nebraska commitment is a tough one to crack as he goes through his process. SMU is in the mix, but he’s also staying in contact with a bunch of programs across the board. Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss and others are in contact with him. On3 continued his moved up the rankings as he’s shined as a senior. SMU’s swinging away on him and hoping it pays off in the end. He’s expected to take an official visit to SMU and return to Alabama, which looks like SMU’s biggest competition out there. It wouldn’t be surprising to see this one come down to the Mustangs and Crimson Tide.
